I should add the crockpot to the essential list. They are far more versatile than many believe.
Not only are they superior for soups and stews, but you can use them to roast and even bake breads and desserts. I've even known of people doing cakes in them.
Most crockpots come with two selectors: high and low. However, some came with auto. Auto started out on high temperature then would drop to low.
DS is going to Texas in his Motor Home. Many one night stays on the way with the afternoon and morning for relaxing and sightseeing (not cooking).
He wants recipes for dinners that his DW can whip up and cook in crockpot on the way to the next location. When they arrive dinner will be ready!
I use the crockpot at home all the time, but we don't use it for camping due to we mostly camp in bear country. Having difficulty thinking of things that would be convenient and specific to what one would have available in a camper while traveling!
They will have to stop about twice a week for groceries, will be gone for 2 1/2 weeks!
Thanks for your help!

[Dutch oven - I knew if I did not mention this, I'd been roasted alive. (Insert bad pun there.) Truth be told though, I don't own one nor at this point do I care to.
Mighty dangerous confession on this site I do believe Steve ....took some guts to post that part ;)....I have yet to discover the beauty of a dutch oven either but I am sure if I got hooked I would shout it's greatness to the rooftops :chef: ( trying to avoid backlash can you tell?.....haha)
Also, at some point on one of these posts above you mentioned cake recipes in the crockpot....my sister told me that a long time ago but I have yet to try one....do you know a relatively easy one you can share or point me in the direction of a good website for crockpot recipes? Thanks.......SCmomma
PS.(My sister makes some delicious macaroni and cheese in her crockpot and I'll try to get the recipe from her for that if anybody is interested)
Don't know how many "late night TV" watchers there are here, but I bought a set of HANDY-DANDY Ron Propiel knives off the infomercial. The special they had was - Buy a set, get a set FREE! Second set went into the camp kitchen box. And, when I ordered, I also got a wood block for the home set. Well, when it arrived, it was seriously cracked. I call their customer service, and eventually got a replacement block, and got to keep the broken one. Guess where it went? (by the way, these things are SHARP!)
Slow cooker reviews from Cook's Illustrated.
First, I consider Cook's Illustrated to be the Consumer Reports of the home food equipment world. Additionally, their recipes are always sound.
Here's there review: http://www.cooksillustrated.co.....ocid=25818. You get what you pay for, but often the most expensive thing isn't necessarily the best thing.
Does anyone have or know anything about the Coleman PerfectFlow Insta Start Grill Stove? m=ATVPDKIKX0DER. I was thinking about ordering one, along with the griddle that goes along with it. We already have a Coleman 2-burner propane stove, but I also wanted to buy a small propane grill this year for grilling. I'm tired of messing with our small charcoal grill. This seems to do everything I want and has good reviews on Amazon. I thought if it worked well, we could just use it for grilling and stove-top cooking, and eliminate carrying the propane stove along for outside cooking. I'm always looking for ways to eliminate unnecessary items, and it's usually just my DH and myself on most trips. So we don't need anything very large.
bjjohnstone ~ like you I have a two burner Coleman L/P stove that we use outside, usually on the C/G picnic table. And in most cases it is connected to a re-fillable L/P tank rather then using those 16oz disposable canisters. This stove performs so much better than the camper's in/out low pressure stove, which is always left inside.
There are griddles that will fit that two burner Coleman stove, I've seen them.
But I personally would hesitate about giving up my little charcoal grill. Do use it from time to time but really not that often. And then it's a cheapie that I get from Wal-Mart; and there's an old timey hardware store in a little town while enroute to a favorite fishing spot in the mountains that always has these type items at a fair price. I would rather buy a ten buck charcoal grill and toss it at the end of the season then mess with having to clean another L/P appliance. Besides, charcoal is often used with the camp dutch oven so that is always at hand.

Always wondered about those....and you can't ever have enough sharp knives while camping eh?
