We stayed at Bull Run Regional Park about 5 years ago when we visited the area. From what I remember, there is a waterpark in the campground as well as nice spacious sites. According to the website, they have full hookup sites in this park.

From this location, we had an easy drive to see the sites. We visited the National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles: http://airandspace.si.edu/udvarhazy/ This is probably one of the best museums we've been to, and was only 12 miles from the campground. They actually had 2 flight simulators that you could go into...Joe played pilot, I got to be the gunner...what a blast  ;D

There is also a Metro station reasonably close (17 miles) away in Fairfax, VA (Vienna Station). Taking the Metro into DC would probably make your life a little easier - - and the kids may enjoy the adventure. It would certainly be easier than trying to find parking.

Here are a few other ideas:

Greenbelt Park (NPS, http://www.nps.gov/gree/planyo.....ground.htm, no electric or water) - Just a little north of the city (near where I-95 meets the beltway).  I think it's not too far from a Metro station.

Cherry Hill Park (Private, http://www.cherryhillpark.com/index.cfm, full hookups) - Not 100% sure where Cherry hill is, but I think it's a little north and east, closest to the city and I think they run shuttles to the Metro. I've read positive reviews about it from others, but haven't been there myself.

Pohick Bay Regional Park (http://www.nvrpa.org/park/pohi.....ly_camping, electric only) - About 20 miles south, just east of I-95 and on the Potomac.  Been there a couple of times and it's a pretty good place with a good amount to do just around the park.  I've also read some positive reviews from others.  Would need to drive into the city or hit the Franconia-Sprinfield Metro station.

I live in the area, but don't usually camp that close.  If you have any questions about the area, let me know and I should be able to help out.

I stayed at Cherry Hill Park last year while visiting DC.  It's a clean place with caring folks.  They are definitely easy to work with.

They are close enough that you needn't drive anywhere and can catch a bus at the park to a subway station.

As it's a private facility, they do tend to pack 'em in.  However, I didn't find that to be a problem as I just based myself there.  I was back only for dinner, sleep and breakfast (maybe).  I was parked next to a honking MH and, honestly, never saw them.  Either they stayed in or they were gone.

While there I happened to meet two separate Navy folks who had the same job as I had back when.  It was actually a phenomenal stroke of luck as my job comprised about 2% of the actual Navy force.

They are near an interstate and road noise should be expected.  However, depending on where you are situated, it may not be an issue at all.

For the record, they had the cleanest bath houses I've ever encountered.

I hope this helps!
