Camping Near Talladega Speedway

Last weekend, we took our TT out for it's maiden voyage.  Headed down the road about 25 miles to Talladega Creekside resort.  It was a small campground located on a creek bank, about 7 or 8 miles from the speedway. It's located well off the main drag. There were little cabins that encircled the 16 campsites.  We were the only campers there for the 3 nights we stayed, other than the 2 who pulled in stayed a night and left. (If the CG had been full you could almost  shake your neighbors hand.) We never would have ventured there had it been a race weekend, but we felt safe on this holiday weekend.  The CG host was very friendly, the bath house was clean as was the park overall.  There were picnic tables near the creek with a dock.  DGD loved this, and she and her friend had a fun time in the game room, too.  CG host said it's usually quite (which it was), and even during races (she said they were never full), but in the summer time it is  busy on the weekends with guests tubing, kayaking and canoeing the creek,(they advertise a pick up service down stream).  We enjoyed our stay and plan to head back that way when the weather warms up again.  At that distance, I can still go into work!

Thanks Judy. (Don't want to mention how we got there after dark and it was SOOOOO easy to set up. I'm loving my new TT.)

Ya'll have a happy Thanksgiving!

It's nice to know there's a good campground thats close to us. I picture everything in Talladega to look like the camping setups you see on Television when there's a race, with half-nekkid drunks falling off the roofs of their campers.  ;D Maybe when we get our PUP back, we can meet at that campground, Nancy. In fact, maybe Judy and Al would meet us there for a long weekend. I'll let you know when we are back in service. 🙂

Pat, that sounds good as long as it's after the holidays -- too busy!  Maybe you guys could organize an Alabama Rally!

With our PUP still in the shop, and no time frame for getting it repaired, I'm sure it will be after the holidays, Judy.
I really don't think there's a campground here in Alabama with the qualifications of McKinney a(s far as group camping). So maybe a small Alabama gathering, but I don't foresee a Rally here, like the one we had in Ga in the Fall.

After the holidays sounds great. Like maybe March? As far as I know, the closest CG to image Mckinney CG here in Alabama would be Amity CG on West Point Lake.  Although we've camped at Deerlick Creek (near Tuscaloosa) and really liked it, it's not laid out for a rally.  There is another COE CG near Deerlick, that may be larger, we have never been to it and I can't recall the name of it at the moment.

Nancy, the only other CG near Deerlick (that I'm familiar with) is Lake Lurleen. We've tent camped there, but we haven't taken our PUP there yet. At one time, it was a beautiful lake and campground, but they've let it get somewhat run down.

Another highly recommended campground is at Tannehill, between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham off of I 20/59. I've been to Tannehill Trading Days many times, but we haven't camped there yet.

Deerlick and Tannehill are definitely on our bucket list.

Pat, the other CG near Deerlick is Burchfield Creek.  We really like Deerlick, but we've been told that Burchfield is even better.  I keep hearing good things about Tannehill, but they don't allow reservations.  And I'm pretty sticky about making reservations before I travel.  My biggest fear is to head out to a park and get there only to hear there's no room.

I'm not familiar with Burchfield. I'll have to google it. Is it a state park or private?

I just found it Nancy-it's closed for the season until Feb 28th. It's even closer to me than Deerlick. I didn't even know it existed. It's on my bucket list for next Spring. Looks great!

I've also never heard of it. It would only be a couple of hours away from me. Will have to put it on my list a well. The pick up service sounds awesome.
