My family and sister's family just spent an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend at COLONEL DENNING STATE PARK.
The park is not large, in fact it is quite small....300 acres and a 3.5 acre lake. However, it is right next to Tuscarora state park.
The campground sites were gravel with only 30amp electric and surrounded by trees and other pleasant brush but there was room to walk and spread out. Some sites were short and side by side spurs. We backed up to a river that was quite nice. It was a little hilly so it wasn't great for bike riding.
We had to carry our kayaks to the lake but it was not a far walk. Although it is a small lake, it was great. We could kayak around and still see our party. We fished for awhile and we also just relaxed in the kayaks checking out various things. Supposedly the lake is stocked but we didn't catch anything.
There is a nice sand beach there that the kids had a blast catching salamanders and just generally splashing around. The sand was a nice soft sand. The beach was surrounded by adirondak chairs that were nice and comfy. DW and I just sat watching the kids and enjoying the scenery Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
Currently there are only pit toilets but we simply used the facilities in our camper. The pit toilets were quite nice and clean. The rangers were all nice and did say that after this season they plan to close and put in a nice new bathouse with showers and regular toilets.
In summary I don't think this is a campground to host a large rally but going with a camper or two is awesome and peaceful. I plan to go back.
