We just returned from a Trailblazers Dixie Chapter Rally (TrailManor owners club with SOBs - some other brands - included) at Tybee Island, about 15 miles out of Savannah's historic downtown riverfront. The River's End CG is a city park with full hookups (that includes sewer and cable TV), and all amenities included. The group rally rate of approx. $34/night gave us access to the screened in patio for groups, swimming pool, clean but "beachy" individual bath/shower/sink rooms, and about 2 blocks to the broad beach on an inlet. (We saw what we thought may have been a dolphin fin at first but waited, watched - then more 5 showed up and we thought the fins looked more like sharks; no swimming for us but there are dolphins all in that area as well.) There were only two families at the shore and two couples walking the beach. Tybee as well as Savannah have wonderful seafood and BBQ restaurants; and, of course, Savannah has loads of historic and cultural/shopping places to visit. We took the on/off Old Trolley Tour for the narration and to become familiar with the city and went around the 15 stops, got off and then on the next trolley at stop #1 again. We then used the on/off options for where we learned we wanted to visit. Wonderful walking city and thoroughly enjoyable Sunday.
We "toured" Tybee Island by car on Saturday late morning (you must pay to park on any public road before 5 PM) prior to our group potluck in the evening and found it to be a typical friendly beach town with lots of small shops and souvenier places plus many eating places with fair prices - no gouging. The yard art on the main drag is pretty interesting too, and if you want to go a little upscale in price for seafood but have great atmosphere, excellent crab and shrimp, and an alligator pit for photo ops, then The Crab Shack is the place to go.
This trip was unlike any camping trip we have taken since we were not in camp that much except for the group rally meet & greet Friday at a larger camp site, the Saturday evening potluck in the screened room followed by a fire circle/discussion gathering, and a farewell Sunday breakfast sponsored by the rally hosts who collected $5/couple for the food. We had the breakfast in the clubhouse because the screened room was locked!
We would go back to this little city park again and use bug spray ahead of time to keep from getting eaten up by no-see-ums that we think fell out of the Spanish moss overhead. Yikes!
to bring an older thread back to life and to piggy back off ms judy..... the family and i just returned from tybee this week-end and it was a great time. the campground is small but everyone was friendly. my recommended spots would be 77, 78, or 69. some of the 120's were nice too, but a few of them got too close to the street lamp they had and it takes away from the whole camping experience in my opinion. the pool, as with the rest of the facilities were very nice and clean. beach access was 5 minutes, which was cool because we took the kids on a night walk of the beach and there were a few crabs out and about. funny watching them things run sideways! as judy said, parking in town is crazy. lots of shops and such, but if you do plan to go, get there early. parking fills up quick, and the beach by the pier was much more busier and that's probably because of the touristy shops around. anyway, i hope to return again soon.
