I usually pay attention when people describe their trips and what kind of experience they may have had. I then check out what the campground or area has to offer and decide if I want to go. I have to keep in mind I have a 2 year old son so some places would not be great for him just yet. This past summer I did a solo trip to a state park that had a 6 or 8 mile waterfall hike with like 20 waterfalls. There were lots of stairs. I won't take my son there until he is probably 8. I also went to a state park that had an AWESOME pool, splash park, and waterslide. My son had an awesome time there and he will probably enjoy it until he is in his teens and anything done with Mom and Dad is a drag ::)
I have only been camping in PA a few years so there is still LOTS of state parks I have not been to yet so it isn't difficult to find someplace new to go.

We look for features in a park that suit our activities -- a lake for kayaking and swimming being the most important. We also look for reasonable separation between sites (again, in state parks) by reading reviews, either on a forum or on RVparkreviews.com. We try to research festivals or other events in the area and now that our 2-year-old grandson is often with us we look for activities, either in the park or locally, that would interest him.
Sometimes we'll just book in a new park just to see what it's like, without doing too much research. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose but we usually don't come out of it smelling too badly!
