Anything with a high DEET % on it. Except for kids....or pregnant/breast feeding women etc....
Currently Muskol (30% DEET) in a hand pump (no Can - as is only 23% in a canned aerosol form) for hands feet. Using netting type of clothing (Spay free) is best. Also use ThermoCell For AREA repellent (if not windy and around the little one.) And YES it does work - but does have a odd smell due to the heater....
Use to get 90%+ DEET but recent bug regulations in Canada now limit it. Assume US is similar....
Other non-DEET options are out there - however NONE come close to what DEET can do (unless you drown your self in citronella and smell like a bad Lemon) but much better for kids, pregnant women etc...
I bring ant spray and do under the trailer, wheels. I use a thermocell for area control or have an oscellating fan going under the awning. With rare exception, I don't have bug issues (except stink bugs). When camper is between trips, I might set off a flea bomb inside as any bug will die within about 24 hours of entry - that includes those stink bugs.
Flys and Mosquitoes are not ants. I live in a Canadian Province where the official un-official bird is a Mosquito! But really - they are that thick here at times. Anything weak they will hover just above the skin and search fora small patch with none or very little on....then they attack!!!!
Love my Thermocell! But if walking (in grass or down trails etc...) you need DEET. Or you tend to walk in a more of a slow jogging....just to keep most of them off. LOL
I'm with Jfliz....I look for what has the highest concentration of deet. I used to buy something called 100% deet. It think it was like 90% as well but it kept the bugs away. It is usually expensive and comes in a small bottle. But you didn't need much.
I have had 2 bottles of it for the past few years. DW keeps buying OFF every season thinking we don't have any bug spray yet we have about 5 bottles of OFF so I use that up in the backyard or when it wasn't super buggy. I'll have to check to see if I can still buy the 100% deet in the USA. I spent a week on a deserted island in the FL Keys one summer (on purpose) and the 100% deet was a lifesaver. Those mosquitoes down there would just the OFF off of your skin as an appetizer.
Does anyone else think of bringing bug spray to a BBQ? DW thought I was crazy the first few times I brought it but sure enough...she asked for it during the BBQ. I even put a bottle out (and sun tan lotion) when I have a BBQ if people want to use it.

Back up home from where I'm from the bugs were so bad you had no choice from sun down on to use some kind of repelent. What my mother and the girls used was skin so soft from Avon if I remember cut with water. It worked well and didn't have the after affects or smell I should say of other repelents. Don't have a clue even if you can buy it any more from Avon. Where I am now I'm more concerned about snakes and black bears , I have a cure for that too...............
I can't use DEET; any concentration at all on my skin gives me a severe headache and nausea. It doesn't bother me if DH and DS's use DEET, provided they apply it downwind and let it dry before they get close to me. I find that Avon's Skin-So-Soft bath oil (rubbed directly on the skin (I tend to have really dry arms, legs, feet, though I can't use it elsewhere or else I break out) VERY sparingly works wonders. I mist non-DEET sprays over my head and neck area, but it never works as well as the Skin-So-Soft oil, and the scent of some really makes me gag (such as Repel, which, to me, smelled like a combination of vanilla and rancid milk). Wearing a hat with a large brim seems to work, but maybe it's just my imagination.
Great post, though - just when I was down in the dumps about how I don't enjoy winter as much as summer, I'm reminded of the one thing that I'm probably most thankful for - nothing is biting outside 🙂
Avon makes other bug stuff too, and i really like that. Although if those biters are terrible aggressive, the deet comes out too. We use thermacells if sitting still, esp after showers too keep skin free of bug stuff. If I go to bed with bug repellent on my skin, I wake up feeling like I have been out partying all night, with a terrible hangover headache and etc.

A friend posted this on FB. Don't know if it works, but if it does, how much better would it be for you and your children than the stuff on the market? Think I'll try it!
Combine in a 16 oz spray bottle:
15 drops lavender oil
3-4 Tbsp of vanilla extract
1/4 Cup lemon juice.
Fill bottle with water.
Shake.
Ready to use.
I do have two concerns about this:
1. Will it attract bees?
2. Will it spoil? Need refrigeration?
I'll do some checking and make a batch to test it out. Should probably go somewhere where there would be lots of mosquitoes, like the woods. HEY... I'll go camping :hah:

I would try the Thermocell (keep them away from the area).
DEET will melt some plastics - mostly vinyl.
If your alergic to DEET (there are many out there) OR if you don't want DEET on your skin - try a mesh jacket - or one that can be impregnated with DEET.
I used to work with a company long ago that made cotton mesh jacket that was made to be impregnated with DEET - but no longer due to regulation around DEET.
Up here Avon and other non-DEET products have only a very limited protection (like in spring and sunny days). They are so hungry (and thick in the fall) they will bite though just about anything. ONE little open space without protection - is a free lunch buffet for the little suckers (must come with a neon sign too)!
