We used an old D-cell MAG light for years and it dead this past weekend.  I don't know one flashlight from another, any recommendations?  Are LED really as bright?  What's the down side to them?

That is crazy to pay for a flashlight.

LEDs are very bright.  I personally like the Pelican brand for flashlights.  We use them in the fire department and they take a beating and hold up very well.

I have multiple flashlights of various brands and makes.  I used to like to have a mini mag light- 2 AA batteries- with me while camping since it comes with a belt holster.  Lately flashlights have gotten smaller and even brighter so if I don't have my mini-mag then I grab one of the half dozen free LED flashlights from Harbor Freight that I have and just put it in my pocket.  I think LED's put off a "wierd" light but it is still light.

I never liked the big flashlights.  You always have to carry them in your hand.  If you put it down and it isn't on then you might loose it in the dark.  I always liked to keep the light on my belt or in my pocket now.

LED is the only way to go! No bulbs to blow, longer battery life and just as bright.
I sold fire equipment for a few years and the advancement in LED lights is dramatic.  The lights have become much brighter and most of all less expensive.  I have several maglights and use none of them very often.  I recommend Pelican lights they are high quality but not the most expensive.

We use some Home Depot - Husky 4 pack of LED flashlights that were about $10 and came with batteries.  If I could afford that $400 flashlight, I'd be afraid to use it or loss it.  😮
