DS's usually turn in voluntarily around 10-11, though they have fallen asleep while enjoying the fire (we usually wake them and send them in the PUP when that happens). DH & I usually sit out at the fire and enjoy some time alone; more often than not we wind up dozing off while enjoying the fire, stars, and night sounds. This seems to only last about an hour max (I've checked,as I always feel guilty like we're risking a catastrophe, though if the fire were to burn out of control (and I am paranoid about such things to begin with; it's always usually just coals by this point), we would certainly be wakened/burned before anyone else as we are only 3-4 feet away). We are always wakened by bug bites, muscle cramps from falling asleep in a folding chair, or being rained upon. Then we reluctantly go sleep in the PUP.
I'd love to be able to stay up later, but I find that when I'm camping I tend to wake up extra early because I'm excited about the activities that the day will bring (i.e. no temptation to hit a snooze button). I've thought about having coffee/tea at dinnertime so that I'll stay up longer.
My family will stay up as late as possible. I love the sight, smell, and sound of the coals flickering down to the last embers...there is nothing quite like it. That said, we're very quiet around the campfire and because we haven't started renovating our Apache yet, we rent a cabin that is a bit separate from the camper sites. So I don't have to worry about disturbing other campers with our fire. I am the last to (reluctantly) turn in and it's normally after 1am. My daughter usually falls asleep in her chair and has to be carried into bed by daddy...just the way it should be! 🙂 . My four year old is now a seasoned camper and asks all winter long when will it be time to go back to the campground lol..
