As much as I  like Gettysburg, I'm glad I'm not anywhere near there this weekend.

They're expecting upwards of a quarter of a million people for the 150th events, and some 10,000 re-enactors.

That's just a tad too crowded for my taste........

My boss is an avid black powder weapons shooter and is/was in some club that holds competition shooting events and dressing in period correct clothing i.e. civil war era
He wanted to go to this some kinda bad.

Gettysburg is a real hot spot for Civil War re-enactors every year (July 1, 2, 3, the dates of the battle), but, especially this year.

Not gonna go. It's only an hour from us. Not happening. DH, on the other hand, is a member of one of the amateur radio operator clubs that is running communications for the event. He will be there Thursday and Friday. Fool. We will be home in the pool.

My neighbor is a re-enactor.  He will be there all next week camping right on the farm where they will be doing their thing.  One of these years I'm going to talk to him to see if they need an extra body for something.  I'll volunteer if they let me camp with my family on the grounds.  This way I won't have to deal with traffic.

Won't you have to make your camper look like it belongs in that time period?

LOL.....no, many of them have campers.  Only some of them live in tents 24/7 during the re-enactment.

THis year marks the 150thAnniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.  The Walmarts down that way have even hired extra security and are banning camping on their parking lots.

We were there last year at the same days as the battle, by coincidence too. We watched a reenactment of Pickett's charge that they do every year on the anniversary of the fatal charge across the field. I must say that the way they have preserved the grounds and buildings and have set up the memorials is a very fitting tribute to this great battle of the Civil War. You can read all you want but until you see the grounds and walk the land, you just can't fully understand the scope of what happened and the sacrifices made by all till you do.

I would dearly LOVE to see the reenactment and would especially like for my kids to see it so they might begun to appreciate the atrocity that we call war.

I'd especially like to watch Pickett's charge. It was, perhaps, our finest hour.

Whatever your personal beliefs, I have to respect that both sides were fighting feverishly for what they believed was right. God rest their souls.

I am also a semi-active Civil War buff.  I have never been to Gettysburg, but would love to visit.  Two of my personal favorite sites to visit are Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania.  I have also been to Kennesaw and surrounding sites many times.
We don't have reenactments at Kennesaw that I have ever heard of.  I asked one of the Park Rangers and he said that Federal Law prohibited doing reenactments on the actual battlefields.  I wonder how it is permitted at Gettysburg?
Regardless, I hope to visit Gettysburg someday.

Darrell, they do reenactments at Pickett's Mill State Park to commemorate the Battle of Dallas, which is a little known but important battle during Sherman's march to Atlanta during the engagements from the Allatoona Pass and down to Kennesaw Mountain. http://americancivilwar.com/st.....ga011.html

We back up to Pickett's Mill, and the artillery rounds make our windows rattle! They haven't done a reenactment here for a couple of years though because the last one, the reenactor group went a little crazy and completely disregarded the battle but had a blast riding and running through the woods "shooting" at each other - a whoopin' and a hollerin'.

Where we live (Dallas, GA), there are rock-lined revetments (I think that's what they are called) in the backyard of the place where we store our camper. One of our local historians and war buff told me he had invited folks from Gettysburg down to see them, and when they did, they said these were in better shape than anything in Gettysburg -- or anywhere they have seen. It's in the New Hope area where the Battle of Dallas took place in May-June, 1864. The war buff said he used to go over to the Pickett house after a good rain and go out with the Pickett boys picking up all sorts of artifacts. There is a great little museum at the park if you ever come down. Let us know, we'll do lunch with you and Becky and take you on a tour!

We'll be in Gettysburg next weekend for bikeweek. (9 of the last 10 years)  About 5 years ago, there was flash flooding during the reenactment and they postponed it a week... the newspaper headlines read "Muzzleloaders and Motorcycles".  That was a busy weekend.

I checked out the photo albums.  Looks like a great site to visit.  I just checked Kennesaw again and although they do artillery firing and some demonstrations, they still do not allow reenactments.  I think it has something to do with the way that the land was donated to the park.
Judy, we have been to Picketts Mill, but may take you up on a tour.  That is a great site also.
