We need to replace our lantern and I'd like to buy an LED lantern.  the batteries would last a lot longer, the kids could safely carry it around and they should last for a long, long time.

Are some better than others?  What should we buy?

Daker,
The Coleman 'Quad LED Lantern' is used by a lot of campers with great success.  See the link here: LED Lantern
One of your children can 'use' a portion of the lantern and then return it back to the main base.
Good Luck and Happy Camping!

This is what we use to walk around in the dark http://www.harborfreight.com/2.....67227.html it has three AAA replaceable batteries and plenty of light. At $3.49 you can get one for everyone in the group. We have had two now for a year and they hold up well. I hang it on a belt loop with the hook to walk the Dogs.

Go to campmor.com and search led lantern for a good display of what's available.
