Meh.. I don't mess with slivers or even super small kindling anymore. Just need some smallish sticks. By your list, that would save my thumb and hand. Firestarting paste is a wonderful thing.
As far as the singed nosehairs go, the Firedragon is my tool of choice. It would also prevent the unlisted knuckle burns when you need to adjust the wood on the fire, too. I ran into another camper that had one, and once I saw it, I had to have one.
