I had our cable turned off today. I got tired of the $60 bill showing up every month and only watching 4-5 channels. I have been shopping for a HD antenna and have discovered that there are about 10,000 different ones. Maybe some of you can help me narrow it down. If you use antenna for your television, what do you use. Also I have been looking into a Netflix subscription, but I don't know if I would use it enough to justify the cost. Help me out, thanks!
Miles, Go to this site. It will give you lots of ideas. There is also a link in there someplace where you can put your address or GPS coordinates in and it will tell you what you can expect for off air channels. Good Luck!

DW and I went a year plus without cable. We only had Netflix and I loved it. A salesperson called and talked DW into adding cable and it would stay the same price. It went up and we still don't watch TV, we watch Netflix since we have gotten so used to it.
We watch Netflix through a Roku box ($75 purchase price I think). It works off of WiFi. We have a remote just like a cable box. You can watch whatever you want whenever you want. Pause, fast forward, watch it again, rewind, etc. We watch primarily series and we watch the episodes in order when we want. There are also movies that occasionally we will watch. DS loves all the childrens shows that are on there. I am in the process of putting a television in my RV and one of the things I am going to try doing is setting it up so I can plug my roku box in when we go to campgrounds that have WiFi. I have watched movies through my laptop while camping before.
I never thought of an HD antenna. Maybe I will look into that if I can talk DW into dropping cable again. I hate cable.

Okay, guys, you had me asking questions today and trying to get more info on Roku and Boxee boxes today while I was in WalMart. Not too many salespeople know the whole story on these devices except one has a brother with one and loves it. My questin is: If I can stream it on the computer (such as the series "Revenge"), can I pick up what I usually see on DISH Network? I like HGTV, SyFy, and, of course, the locale news. I saw on the Boxee box that FOX News and SyFy are available, but I'm just wondering what the trade offs are -- besides saving a lot of $$$ -- and do I have to keep basic cable.
The way it is set up is there are "channels" Hulu, Netflix, Fox news, HGTV, and a few others. I think if you have a subscription to Dish network you can watch it through netflix as well. I don't know. Nothing is live. The news is different recorded segments I believe....specials. I don't watch it. I go to CNN.com or wherever to get my news. My mom things it is odd that my sister and I and our spouses don't watch the news or read the paper. We go online for our news. It is faster.
What Netflix has to offer depends on what contracts they have at the time. They have many older TV series currently. I think they will be starting a deal with Disney soon.

This is the place to go see what antenna type you need to pick up the broadcast stations around you. It's a helpful tool.
We just use the set top antenna (a powered/amplified Radio Shack model) from the analog days. It occasionally stutters on certain channels and it often requires adjustments when we change channels. But for free TV, it suits us fine. Maybe one day I'll get enough motivation to hang a multi-element antenna in our attic.
Thanks Jason!!! This helped me decide which antenna I needed. I am going with a large multidirectional rooftop antenna. I think this one will do the job quiet well.
