OK, after reading a few other threads it made me think of this question.
What odd items do you take camping that wouldn't leave without or something you thought totally useless but ended up really using?
For me, us it is the heated mattress pads. We didn't seek them out, they came standard with our camper. Our camping friends made a lot of fun of those things. Until the first night we used them in cold weather. Now no one is making fun of them now.
Coiled Fishing Rod Holders like this http://www.fleetfarm.com/detai.....PAodKXYAkQ They work great for holding up bamboo Tiki Torches when the ground is to hard to drive the bamboo steak into.
speaking of glow sticks....
we were night fishing, and one guy had these miniature glow rope pieces that are designed to attach to a bobber insert
my son thought it was cool, as did I.
since all we had were the large (normal size) glow sticks, I popped a hole into the hanging tab, ran the line through it, and placed the bobber behind it.
whaddya know.... it worked ! it also added about 10 feet to our casting distance....heheh
later on, I saw the price for the bobber glow pieces, and decided I would stick to "our" method.
thingette,
Here's another one for the pool noodles...between scuba tanks to keep them from banging into each other or other gear or the vehicle. Some of us cut them into shorter lengths and run a cord between them with knots to hold them into place.
For us the portable DVD player is essential for my girls before bedtime.

haha billm75!
I think probably the most unusual thing I take camping that has multiple uses is clothespins. They secure clothes to a line, clamp snack bags shut, clip hats/notes/whatever to surfaces inside the camper, clip napkins/plates/playing cards together in the wind, serve as bookmarks, and if you're desperate for a firestarter they can do that too (though I'm not a fan of this since DH and DS's think it's more important to have a blazing fire than to have dry clothes and towels via securing them to a line).

Birdland- we also take lots of clothes pins and clips. We take mostly plastic or vinyl covered, however. Our older plastic ones began to break last year, after twenty or so seasons, so I got these, I don't think you'd need to worry about their use as firestarters!:

I immediately saw the value in this "clothespin" and went to LeeValley and ordered them. Great Post!!!
