I look for all of the things listed, but the main factor is the distance from home currently. DW doesn't get home until 7pm normally. Sometimes she can sneak out at 4 and be home by 5 (although she did that yesterday and a fist fight broke out and both of the employees were escorted out by security) so we like to keep the campgrounds to within 2 1/2-3 hour drive.
I always say my families camping requirements will change over time. I said we would start out in State Parks, which is where we currently are, and then evolve into private campgrounds when DS needs more actiivities like crafts, hayrides, gamerooms, etc. Then as he got a little older we may wind up back in SP's where we could do more boating and biking and hiking.

In all fairness it's all of the above! My main objective in a view of the lake/stream/river. Then all the others fall in afterwards. We also look for a park with lots of hiking trails as that is our favorite thing to do while camping. Distance becomes a factor also. If we are doing just a weekend trip distance is real important. I don't want to spend half my weekend driving and not camping!!
The DW isn't very thrilled about boondocking so we don't do that very often. I tend to sneak off during hunting season and do some then. The funny thing about that is she says there is nothing to do when I boondock hunt. I've tried telling her that you can do the same activities boondocking as we do when we camp with hookups!!!!
Pretty much open to all listed with the possible exception of Boondocking but may even try that if conditions we right. Have a Choc Lab so he enjoys water sports but is just as happy on a trail. Pretty much like having things to see and do but am just as happy being outdoors.
Not that we're retired, can go most anytime and stay as long as we want. Now that is a nice option.
Some of the "special features" we have experienced were restored homes of historic figures (Elijah Clark, A.H. Stephens in GA), the latest being A.H. Stephens, VP of the Confederacy - very interesting man who overcame physical disabilities and was innovative in his treatment of his slaves as will as technology. We've been to caverns at FL Caverns SP, Daniel Boone's settlement in Boonesboro (KY), Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center (FL) in December where we enjoyed lighted displays through the park/CG and a Christmas craft village as well as Stephen Foster museum and a museum in the world-renowned carillon building (where they play carols during Dec.). We still had full CG features - hot showers, hookups, sometimes mini golf, etc., but really liked the diversion and educational fun.
^^^ this.
We like water, so a river, lake or puddle is nice. We try to go somewhere we haven't been before unless there's a place that we feel like we didn't get to see or do it all on a previous trip. When we weigh them, we try to find one that's not too far from home. There's plenty to see that we haven't seen before without having to travel to another state, let alone another country. But that's not to say that there aren't things we'd like to see. I, for one, would really like to see the Pueblo cave houses before I get too old to explore them.
