I love it when there is a small pile of firewood, though it rarely happens. I think at some privately owned campgrounds they take the wood left behind and resell it with their wood.
I once found a lantern hook that attaches to a tree at a campground. I joked at the spring opener that if I forgot it I would be simply returning it to the place I found it.
I am going to cheat here. when the weather is nice i usually bring my metal detector with me camping so i have found coins, silver coins, jewelry, both silver and gold and other intersting metal objects. keys fobs metals pins etc. But if I had to answer the question what have I found on top of the ground at my camp site i would have to say def.. tent pegs found 3 at the french creek season opener last week 2 plastic and one metal. I am going to check regulations to see if i can detect at promise land have to follow state park rules if allowed I will bring detector with me for this trip and I will post what i find at my site.

Tent pegs is usually what I find. I have a lot of those standard thin metal pegs that come with just about every inexpensive tent. Last Summer I found 6 of them in my site. It looked like they probably rolled the tent out, tossed a peg to each corner, then decided that they didn't want to put it there. I guess they grabbed the tent and just left the pegs.
In the Bayside I just kept them in the front trunk, I'm not sure where they will go in the new Roo.
Last trip out in February, I found "our" missing tent peg for our EZ Up and DH found a little vinyl end cap that fit perfectly on the spring release handle to open our camper. We were happy campers! Firewood is always something we appreciate when left behind or in a vacant spot, but a lot of the CG hosts who clean each site immediately on a camper vacating, usually gather it and who knows what happens to it!
Last fall, while I was walking my dog, I noted someone drove off and left a 20 pc. set of Lynx levelers, but by the time I walked the dog back and told DH, he went to get them (in a basically deserted CG) and they were gone. I sure hope it was the camper who drove off! (They also happened to be in a TrailManor.)

Good thing to check first, especially in state or federally operated CGs in Georgia. My brother came to McKinney one time and brought his metal detector to search for gold (yes, we had the first gold rush here in NW Georgia over a century or so ago). The cleaning lady was nice and came over while he was fitting it together and told him in no uncertain terms: "Put that away immediately!" She said if a ranger had come by, the detector would have been confiscated, he would have been heavily fined and possibly jailed, besides getting us in trouble too.
We have actually found a HUGE screen room.....brand new, with instructions and bag still set up on our site. We left it up the whole week we were there and no one came and claimed it so it came down and now resides in our camper!!!
Haven't had a chance to use it yet but are hoping to the end of next month!
Years ago I found a pocket knife at a Boy Scout campground. I don't think I found anything interesting lately.
What I have left behind.....thats another story. I have left behind my favorite fire poker twice and a plastic tote I keep wood in. Thankfully each time I left it behind it has been with another canvascampers.com member because I was at their site doing something with the fire and left it behind. Currently my Mariska Hargitay has my fire poker that I left behind at the spring opener a few weeks ago

Oh yeah, I forgot that we found a Swiss Army Knife while loading up the TV to leave the campsite one trip. I gave it to my son.
I work at a CG on the Beach and many Europeans fly into the Airport in town, take a cab to Camping World(20 min. ride), rent a C class and drive 45 min. to the Beach, we are the only CG on the Beach! Just yesterday got 3 new camp chairs, sauce pan and skillet, 20 piece flatware, Foil, Olive oil, spatula, slotted spoon, charcoal grill, charcoal, starter, 2 rolls paper towels, trash bags, toilet paper and paper plates. I've worked there 7 years, its crazy the stuff left behind. The 1st year got a Coleman roadtrip grill, a green Heineken one so must have been a promotional thing but it was clean and newish. Boss said probably doesn't have enough flame, take it to the shop and blow the holes out with the air compressor! Did it, hooked up to propane and voila, still use it in my Carport, even the ignitor works 8)
