We are a family of 5, the 2 of us and 3 kids.  Why do so many campgrounds charge us extra for the kids - like $6 per night?  We are self contained and aren't using anything more because of the 3 kids.  Isn't camping suppose to be family oriented?

That's why I like state and national parks better than Private Resorts. The Private Resorts may have more amenities but sometimes its not worth the price to me. I am good with a lake or stream to swim in rather than a pool full of chlorine to kill the funk that is in it.

They only charge ya if you tell them.  ::)

I believe they would say that the extra person would be a strain on their infratructure, more electricity, more water, more trash, blah blah blah.  If I were you and you go to a campground that charges you, I would flat out tell them you don't want to pay the extra kid rate.  Chances are high they will waive it since it is an "extra".  I know from when I worked in the hotels there were many extras that I would waive just 'cause I didn't want to hear the guest complain.  Plus certain extras were complete BS and meant to increase revenue.

I think they should charge by weight. Big ole MH/buses would pay more.

Don't mean to pick on you but, isn't this the reason they started the business??? 😉

State/national parks are usually great.  I agree with mdbaird76.  I like the extra room, vegetation, etc. at those parks, instead of being packed in like sardines.  Also, extra family and tents/etc. are free.

That annoys me as well.
We will be in a couple state parks in June and July that charged us an additional $5 (per night) for the 3rd kid.
I think it's the South Carolina state parks on our trip that are doing it.
