Sorry about your issues.
I have not looked into them because of the price, but have heard they are great.
Hopefully you can get another one.

In the end it was operator error, after years of digital stills, the workflow is a lot different

I would love to get one, but everytime I save up the money, it goes for something else more important.  This last time it was new tires for our car.  The only issue that I have ever heard about the GoPros are taking underwater pictures/video.  You need another housing for it so the lens will be correct and not blurry.

One of these days...one of these days.
