DW and I did takeout or curbside to go from Applebee's the other day for dinner.  Many places have the same concept.  They bring the food out to you rather than you getting out of your car and going inside to pick it up.

So, Do you tip the person who brings the food to your car?

I used to be a bellman in a hotel and I do believe in tipping.  However, I do not feel I need to tip this guy.  A waiter or waitress is coming back and forth to my table, bringing me drinks, how is my meal, cleaning up (or the busboy) so I will tip the waiter or waitress.  TIP stands for To Insure Prompt Service.  What is this guy actually doing that deserves a tip?

What happened to really tick me off about this particular situation was that we paid with a gift card and the guy said "are you going to use the rest of your gift card?" there was $3 left on it.  I said "yes".  Now what was going thru his mind?????  I saved my receipt and I am going to go back again soon to see if this guy ran my gift card thru again to eat up that remaining $3 thinking I would probably loose the card or think nothing of it if it came up as $0.

BTW- I will tip if the food is bad, that is the cooks fault, not the waiter or waitress.

I tip for good service. Lousy service, don't look for a tip from me, nor for me to be back soon. And don't be surprised if I tell the manager about the lousy service.

LL,

I agree you wouldn't tip at the drive through at a McChain would you? To further my point Sonic just opened here in NY in the last year or so and I don't tip the roller skate person either, they deliver your food etc. and then you don't see that person again. So no I wouldn't tip the curb guy, and these days every 3 bucks should be looked out for.

This should start a ruckus! When the DW and I go to a fast food place to eat I refuse to take my tray and dump it. DW yells at me every time to pick the tray up and dump it. I tell her that is what the employees get paid to do. I don't ask the the truck drivers where I work to unload the trucks for me!! IT'S PART OF MY JOB!!!

I don't tip at FFR and only tip at restaurants if the service is good. I generally rate service by my tea glass ....if I have to rattle the ice in it to get the waiter/waitresses attention it's not gonna be a good night for them!!!!

I'll double check, but I think the togo station is a tipped employee.  That said, I say, and I'm in the restaurant business, NO.  It was me in the kitchen who usually put together those bags.  Applebeyotches is different, they have an expeditor who trays (bags) meals for busy times.

Sonic jacks my jaw.  I'll use the drive through.  Too many of those 'servers' feel the change is rightfully theirs.

Point of contention: if TIPS is an acronym for To Insure Prompt Service it would be paid PRIOR to the serving.

IMHO tipping has gotten totally out of hand.  Everytime you tourn around someone else expects to be tipped for just doing their job!

Yeah, but ....

A business is a business, and if you want my business, or should I say my continued business, then it's up to that business to show it appreciates my patronage, and the best way to do that is good service. There are a couple of restaurants that I frequent regularly and they are clean, well managed; have good food and priced within my budget (reasonable), and we get good service. Over and above giving my patronage, paying for the things ordered, I tip for that good service.

My wife and I had our reception at the Inn at Chester Springs in Lionville PA.  We have gone to their restaurant about 3 times a year for 3 years.  They have an awesome  buffet on Fri and Sat nights .  The waiters and waitresses remember us and know that we got married there.  They talk with us all the time and remember us every time.  We tip very good and we go back because of the service (and the food).

Bixll- I agree with you.  The Christmas tipping list is crazy.  Now I do throw out a lot of garbage so I do tip the garbage men, but my BIL refuses t tip them (and I agree for his situation).  He puts out 1 maybe 2 garbage cans a week, the normal household amount.  He pays his trash bill or taxes.  Why does he have to pay more for them to do their job.  I, on the other hand, can put out 4 cans twice a week and various other large items.  They have never refused anything I have put out, even when I remodeled my kitchen.
