Critters invaded over the winter

What a mess.  I followed advice from others and placed cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil throughout pop-up before storing this winter.  Just opened her up today and the mice had a field day with my bunk curtains and said cotton balls.  Found a giant nest in one of the drawers.  Just finished stripping all mattresses and cushions, throwing away all drawer papers, vacuuming every square inch and using Clorox bleach to wipe down all hard surfaces.  Bunk curtains were in the process of being replaced this year anyway, but kinda glad I left them in there, otherwise they may have gone after the cushions or mattresses.  All window curtains were removed before storage to make room for new ones.  Anybody else ever have this problem?  I thought we sealed up all exterior entrances pretty well, so not sure how the little darlings got in.  How do we avoid this in the future? Any advice?  On a positive note, it's probably the cleanest it's been since it was new!  🙂

Thanks, I suppose we'll have to double check our sealing.  What a pain.  I wonder if one of those electric ultrasonic repellents actually work....

I'm sorry to hear of your critter issue.  I had that happen in my popup once.  They chewed a few holes in fairly new canvas and I was mad :tickedoff:  I hosed out the entire interior, carpet cleaned all cushions, etc.  The next winter I put an entire huge box of dryer sheets in it, peppermint smelly stuff, etc.

What I feel is a huge help in keeping mice damage to a minimum......opening up the trailer and checking on it during the winter.  When I had mice in my popup I had a boat on the roof racks on my trailer and I couldn't lift the roof with the boat on it.  So it stayed closed for a good 4 months.  The next winter I opened it at least every month and with my TT I currently have I am in it often and just check on things during the winter.

YIKES!

It's one of our worst nightmares; we've always had a problem with mice in our outside sheds (we've been here for 20 years) and still can't figure out why they never got into our PUP or the hybrid that we've had for the past year.

We do use Fresh Cab; another post mentioned asthma concerns so this might not work for everyone (DH has allergen-triggered asthma but Fresh Cab doesn't contain ingredients that aggravate him in particular; it all depends on the individual and their personal triggers).  If you are sensitive to plant-derived aromatics then Fresh Cab probably isn't a good fit for you.

We always worry that they will get in (due to the trouble in our sheds), but we've been lucky so far.  I often hope that maybe they are so happy to chew on twine, yard bags, and my 'outdoor beater sneaks' that they have no desire to go elsewhere.

Wishing you the best of luck - hopefully physical barriers like metal wool will do the trick.
