We are planning a 5 week trip across country this year right after schools over, leaving from Ohio and heading west with a big loop down south and back up the coast.  What are the things that you thing we must see along the way?  I'm just starting to schedule things now and hoping things are pushed till July because of school and all the snow.

Good Luck and Have a great trip. We did a cross country loop with our teenage boys 15&13 in July 1990.  Drove 10K mile in 5 weeks with a cargo van. Boys were in a tent and DW & I slept in the van We went toSmokey Mt NP then on to Hot Springs and on to the Grand Canyon to Salt Lake to Seattle back east along I 90 detouring to Yellowstone, Badlands. After the Badlands it was straight back to NY. I remember at Mesa Verde sitting down to eat and the Mule Deer comming right up to us expecting to be fed.  The moved away with in minutes when we did not feed them they never came back when we ate the next morning. We let the boys pick one place they wanted to visit along the route. This was BC( before computer) We started planning the fall before by collecting state tourist mags and maps.  We could not camp in the GC we had to camp in Paige Az as I recall.  In Yellowstone we were able to get a site by arieving there by early morning an stayin in one of the less popular campgrounds.  Today I would use WWW. recreation.gov site to try to make reservations at the national parks.  We bought a pass at the first NP that gave us discount on enterance fees.  We were flexible and only had one real deadline in  Cimminoron New Mexico our trip was planned around this deadline. My van was checked out and serviced before we left.
Today I would order tourism mags on line and collect hard maps to plan the trip.  I might consider a gps if doing the same trip again.
Good Luck and Have a safe trip

I'd certainly recommend a good atlas and DeLorme state maps even if you have GPS.
And of course a journal.  Make sure you have your cameras date imprint enabled.  It'll help you match up your photos afterwards.

We drove from PA to Yellowstone last year.  Our drive was a total of 5008 miles and took 20 days... I was woried about gas prices last year...yikes :'(.  We drove out on 90.  Half the fun of the trip was no the big attractions but the ones that only take an hour or two to look at.  They help to break up long days of driving.  Some of the things we stoped at along the way are the Corn Palace in Mitchel, SD,  Badlands, and Devils Tower.  The Blackhills were awsome.  We stayed only two nights and I wish we would have stayed more.  We saw Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse but also did Needles Hwy through Custer SP.  The views are awsome.  We also went to Deadwood and did a lil gambling as well as go to Mt Moriah Cemetary and see the graves of Wild Bill and Calamity Jane.  There is so much to do and see and driving even further will mean that there is more stuff see and do.
