We are heading out the end of the week for O'Leno SP in Alachua, FL, for a rally. We joined the same group last fall and had a nice time. I was the very first rally we attended, and it led to helping organize and co-moderate a mini rally and a big fall rally for Georgia and whoever else was close enough to attend!
This weekend, the Alligator Warrior Festival and Reenactment will be held in the park, and we are really looking forward to that. I've already got our dry goods ready and will centralize our cold/frozen foods the night before we go and put them in our thermoelectric cooler. When I start the preps like this, especially the cooler, the dogs glue themselves to us hoping not to be left behind. They never are but just in case...... 😀

Quotes work normally here. ;D
Can I quote that? 😀
See you tomorrow, Matt. I'm bringing Fire Captain Jim's RV NiteLites - put them in the van today - and also donating a Halloween basket of some goodies and will bring them over to your site. Also have Li'l Smokies in BBQ sauce for Friday. Hope the rain is gone by Friday evening!
Not only did it not rain, but the whole weekend was beautiful. The Aligator Warrior Festival was interesting and a good day's outing. The reenactment was fun (and funny - only one guy "died" and it looked like he just got tired) and the "fire sticks" shooting in the woods by both the "Seminoles" and "soldiers and farmers" were loud and exciting. Louder still was the canon! Lots of smoke, yelling "orders" to the troops, Indians whooping and hiding behind trees -- all to the delight and enjoyment of about 150 spectators. The spectators got a big thrill before the battle began when an innocent rat snake decided it better high tail out of the battleground via the spectator line. There was also a beautiful Native American Indian Dog on leash who was very calm but did get pretty worried when the canon and rifles started blasting. He did much better than the 10-yr. old crying girl who got scared and had to be brought back to the "Indian village" by her mom. The village was interesting with the reenactors in full costume, dancing and playing drums, selling their wares, and demonstrating (and selling) their crafts. There were food vendors out front of the village, and we skipped a camp lunch and bought some delicious BBQ ribs and fried fish before heading back to the dancing circle.
We found an interesting way to make an "oak cross" fire which we have yet to try to replicate. You use 4 oak logs of approximately the same size to make a fire and put them in a cross shape with a hole in the center. Fill the hole with hot coals and regulate the temperature of the fire by moving the 4 logs in or out. The man demo'ing this technique (which was used by all the reenactors) had just boiled a pot of water on the log circle formed over the hot coals and then moved the pot off to a side log on the cross. Then he put another cooking pot over the coals and repeated. He said he could keep all the pots hot because the radiant heat from the cooking pot would keep everything ready to eat. I guess it was the precursor to the Coleman campstove. ;D

WE were there & had a great time. The weather was perfect! We couldn't stay for the re-enactment because Carly (the pupster) flipped out with the very first shot. The Saturday pot-luck dinner was fantastic!!!
Regardless it was a great time had by all.

Couldn't figure out who you were until I saw your names, lol.
There's always spots available for camping...since we have two small girls and we've never been there how was it? It's only about an hour from us, actually less than that but I haven't had the time to do recon on it. Any thoughts before I head over to check it out. I'd be curious what any of you think of it.
Thanks for the help,
Doc
Just saw your post, Doc. We were away camping that week!
O'Leno State Park is nice, typical northern Florida sandy and shaded CG. The bathhouses are very nice, and the sites are a good size. We were at a rally off the other forum, and Wizfisher was the coordinator. He did a great job with no forum help other than some of the members who are also on here - Canvas Campers (which is also why the Georgia contingent flocked to CC after our last fall rally with "them" ;)). If you get to go to the Alligator Warrior Festival when it comes round again, I think you and the family would really enjoy it. Besides the reenactment (a bit corny but good) and the "Seminole" village, it makes the weekend interesting. Of course, the rally folks made it really great!
