I like to map my routes often, meaning "tracing" myself the route, adding pins and quick info on them. Just changed laptop to a windows 7 64 bit and my very old and faithful mapping (Maps'n'Go) software is of course obsolete! I am finding many free map software but none I can add my "stuff".
If anyone knows of any it would be great as I am sure others would also benefit from it...

try using google maps. you need to sign in and then you can create your own maps, marking things you want.
here is the map I made of where we camped last year:
