Had a great time at the campground...pretty much had the place to ourselves. Half the campground was closed and only a handful of the open sites were occupied. Definately will not be our last... 🙂

Next camping trip will be at McKinney CG on Lake Allatoona near Acworth GA on January 18th & 19th
This was our first trip to this campground and it wont be our last. We had driven through right after we purchased our PUP and for some reason it just did not jump out at us. We booked here because Amity and Whitetail Ridge CG's have closed for the winter here on West Point Lake andsince going to the darkside the DW is more open to winter camping.
Anyway...one whole section of the campground was closed off (Sites 1-54)...it looked as if they were working on that area...at least from the view at our campsite.
The sites in our loop were nice....we booked site #68 as it was a pull through due to the fact of getting in after it was dark we did not want to have to back into a site we had never seen.
All the sites in the loop had decks and these were not just simple decks but they had shelves and bench seating around the railings. Only thing we were not sure if we liked or not was the fact that the fire ring was down on the lower level from the deck and some had very small areas around them...maybe only enough for two people.
The other backin sites had slopes and some even curves. Again think you would want to arrive before dark. The other loops were very nice and they have a large number of double sites. Having a PUP would make the double sites nice with friends as you could spin one around to be facing each other and have the large area between. One disadvantage to going to the darkside as you could not do this...your friend with the PUP would have to... 🙂 🙂
The showers were older but were not run down and were very clean...did not use them but we always look.
Several loops would work great for a future rally...I just hear that the CG is very popular so would have to have the group ready to book and pretty much book a loop at the same time...a coordinated effort...LOL ;D ;D
We will be returning
Just wanted to add one thing though. If there is a downside to the park (and West Point lake in general) it's the water level. I've been around these parts for 46 years. I have never seen the water level so low as it is right now. Most all docks are sitting on the ground. Plus you have to walk in mud and muck just to get out to the water. It's been like this for a while now. I'm starting to worry if it'll ever come back up. It's a shame cause it was such a beautiful lake. I remember a big argument going on between the state, Atlanta and Corp of Engineers a couple of years ago about providing more water for Atlanta. I'm assuming this had some bearing on the way it is today 🙁
I had to reply MC7, I live just on the lakes edge of Lake Lainer. The Corp. of Engineers has been releasing waters down stream to "keep river waters high enough down stream". This area and the lower part of our state has experianced a dought over the summer. We are roughly 12-15 inches behind on rainfall this season and Lake Lanier is less than 6 feet away from the record low since the lake was made. I know West Point Lake is low as well for the same purpose. The Corps is getting all kind of grief right now due to no barge traffic or less traffic on the Mississippi. I know Georgia, Florida, Alabama have been fussing and fighting about the water on The Chattahoochee for years and probably will contine for many more. Florida wants water for their oyster and clam production and barge traffic, Alabama wants water for more water consumption, Georgia wants it to keep the lakes full and water consuption as well.
I have no simple answers other than pray for the all mighty Lord to send some rain! Maybe soon we will get some and the country can rebound on the crops and other water needs!
Fire Captain Jim is right about the Corps of Army Engineers' water management. The water levels in Lake Allatoona in our neck of the woods are always dropped around Labor Day and left to refil by mid-March, I believe. That's been going on for a very long time even though the bordering states have filed lawsuits and are vying for water rights. It's raining tonight here in Dallas, GA, and a flash of lightning just lit up the living room!
