my old one died, and I need a new one. ( lent it out to an uncle and his vehicle was totalled by an electrical pole and wires while parked)
so having been years and years since buying one, and now needing one...
what is the preferred brand, make, model, etc....
my wife will be towing the HTT as well, so it needs to be easy for her to function, or at the very least just set it and forget it for her.
I will be wiring it in myself to a 2008 trailblazer with tow package.
not looking to spend a fortune, but down want one that is literally CHEEEEP....
thanks
I have 2 of these ....... work perfectly .......... http://www.etrailer.com/Brake-.....90160.html
The prodigy P2 or P3 are the most popular. I have one of each. They are set it and forget it. I have the P3 for my High Wall trailer since it has boost (add trailer brakes sooner than truck brakes). Both have kits of a plug and play wire bundles for specific trucks and vans.

Best place to buy is Etrailer.

I have 2 of these ....... work perfectly .......... Tekonsha Primus
This is the same model that I have, and I agree that it works great. It's been used with our old popup as well as our current HTT.
Of all of the things to save money on, I personally wouldn't skimp on a brake controller. A good brake controller could mean the difference between a disastrous situation and coming away without a scratch.
Whatever you get, the general consensus based on things I've previously read is to get a proportional controller which applies additional braking power based on an internal accelerometer, not a time-delay model which applies additional braking power based on time.
Add another satisfied used of a Primus. IMO, you can't go wrong with Tekonsha. The Prodigy and P3 users, from what I've read and heard, are unanimous in recommending either. I haven't run across nearly as many Primus users, but it works great and is easy to set and use, at a slightly lower price.
Having just come home from upstate PA, and having come down some pretty steep grades on winding mountain roads, the Primus worked flawlessly.

How much off? Check Tekonsha's mounting instructions to be sure, but I don't think you can have it off side to side by much, if anything. With the Primus you can be up to 70 degrees off level front to back, so I had it mounted on the knee kick to the right of the steering column in the F150. That can open up more mounting locations.
Cab designs on newer trucks can make it challenging to mount some accessories!

well I got good deal today on a new P2.
Camping world is the only local place that carries them, and they were on sale for 119.
also got 2 strap on mirrors on sale too for $11 each.... and I got a 20% off coupon from a customer leaving the store unhappy. ( so the mirrors ended up being almost free)
I could not rely on shipping getting here in time, and the prices online were not really that much different.
now to just install it !
as a side note:
while we were looking around, a guy was in there TRYING to buy a WDH.
We got to talking about campers and travelling, etc.
after 10 minutes of NO customer service people to be found after walking the entire store, I suggested he go down the street to a shop that we use for farm equipment and trailers. they sold Equalizer WDH, and bet they would even match a sale price here.
I even called them first to see if they could help him out. He talked with them for about 5 minutes, handed me the phone back and a coupon/voucher for 20% off
any IN STORE product he got from a good sam rally last month.
The last thing he said as he pointed to the $700 unit on the wall, " I would have bought this one, and paid to have it installed today, if someone would just have helped me." and he shrugged, said thanks, and drove off down the road.
( btw, I called the other shop later, and the owner ( who we know) sold him the same unit, at a better price, and installed it in 1 hour)
Not to beat a dead horse but I need a controller ASAP. R&P carriages had suggested the P2 to me last year as a great controller that was also simple to use. Well I'm looking now and at least on Amazon the P2 and P3 are only $5 bucks different? Why would anyone bother with the P2 at those prices? They have the Primus for $74 bucks shipped.
I had not heard of the Primus IQ but that really seems to be the gem in the line. Same sensor as the P2 & P3. Seems to just be missing some of the diagnostics and the ability to work with surge brakes which I don't even get how any of them work with that. Frankly this is where I'm leaning for the little bit we tow. Maybe 1,500 miles a year with a 2,500 pound trailer behind a 6,000 pound truck. I am going to be hauling some race cars around for some friends that will be much heavier but that will be very rare.
So can anyone tell me why I would need the P2 or P3 over the Primus? It's not clear to me if all of them have the manual brake option or not. My only other thought is circuit protection but I suspect the Primus is using the same basic scheme just with less feedback. Other than that I really see no reason for the more expensive controller, especially for my limited use. I'd rather put the $50 towards the brakes I have to add to the camper!
As always thanks in advance!
P3
One of the things you get with P3 over primus is Boost mode. In boost mode, you can have the trailer brakes "lead the TV" as in the braking will be harder/sooner. This is required for times when the trailer is as heavy or heavier than the TV. I use B1, the lowest setting for my 4000# trailer to not have the truck brakes taking most of the load.
