from answers.com: The 1500 has a towing capacity of 8100 lbs in 4WD, or 8400 with two-wheel drive. 2500 models can tow up to 12,000 lbs.
So, which engine/model do you have? Is it 4wd?
My father pulled a 25ft 1974 travel trailer with both of his suburbans, one of which was a diesel. Not sure what year either of the suburbans where. Definitely before 1992 as he never bought a new suburbans. Trailer had brakes, and he used a WDH w/ 2 sway bars.
it also depends on what rear end ratio you have, 3.42, 3.73 and so on. the higher the number, the more you can tow. having the info on engine size and 4wd is only part of the formula for an exact tow amount.
but, 2wd will have a higher towing amount than a 4wd, due to the extra weight of the front drive axle.
remember, the towing amount is based on only a full tank of gas and a 150lbs. driver. anything else in the Burb will lower the towing amount by its weight.
We have a 2000 Suburban 1500 with 4wd. I can't remember all the other details but I know we could tow over 7000. We bought a Puma that weighed a bit over 6000 and then everything else. We tried to keep the 1000 lb under but we were a little less. Yes we could tow it but it was not a comfortable tow. Our milage was terrible and I know it had to be hard on the Suburban. There was no way we could go through the mountains with it so we traded for a much lighter hybrid and we are loving it. DH is so much more comfortable towing and I just love the openness. Anyway I would not get too close to what it says you can tow.

I have a 03 Z71 Suburban. I have read my owners manuel but still just do not get what I am reading. Would someone please tell me what max trailer weight, including passengers and stuff the Burb can pull..Thnks, Vern :-
You can tow that Bayside, along with enough food and clothing for a month, five 80 qt coolers full of ice, and load up about a dozen people and I doubt that suburban will even know it.
