Newer brake lights switches  may have wires for the transmission and shift interlock etc, So I try to stay away from them. If you look at your third brake light in the back window, what color is the wire that gets power when the brakes are applied? This wire can be used to signal the brake controller anywhere from under the dash, left kick panel, or drivers door sill to the third brake light itself and maybe easier to connect to. I find the door sill the easiest and it will not effect anything else on the TV (tow vehicle). IIRC the green/red wire if the brake light feed (hot) the light green goes to the turn signal switch to feed the normal brake lights and the dark green is the third (high mount) brake light feed. Hope this helps, Ray

There are two switches on the brake peddle (they may be combined into one). One for the lamps and one for the cruise control. The lamp switch has a Red wire that is B+ from fuse 14. And one or two Lt. green/red wires that are the  switched brake lamp feed to fuse 28 for the high mount stop lamp and fuse 30 for the regular stop lamps (thru multifunction switch) The cruise control de activation switch uses the orange and Lt blue / black wires.  So you need to tap the Lt. Green / red wire.

The wire for the thrid brake light from fuse #28 is Dark Green.

Since the controller is mounted under the dash I would go to the green/red wire off the brake lamp switch, it should be the easiest to access. Trying to find the right dk green wire off the back of the fuse block might be difficult without the connector pin outs and if you go directly to the third light it takes a lot of wire to get back to the dash.

Sounds like a plan to me. The factory ground connections would be good.

Any metal in the dash will be a ground especially if there's already one there from the factory.
