Is it ok to drive through a tunnel with a filled 20lb propane tank on the camper?  What is the law and is it different in different states?
How anyone every driven with the refrigerator running on propane?  Just curious!

The laws do vary by states.  I know VA is big on inspection prior to entering their tunnels.  It takes less time to get inspected than it does to get back on the road.

What is the issue with a propane tank in a tunnel?  I have never encountered it.  What do you do if you have a tank on your pup?

For whatever reason, the inspector checks to ensure the gas is turned off.  Here's a link to a discussion on another RV site.

So you can drive through those tunnels as long as you have it turned off?  I thought you were banned from going thru the tunnel.  Like I said, I never had to deal with it.

I have a friend who bought a pup out of state and had to drive through a tunnel like that.  They said they left the tank with the PO because they couldn't go through the tunnel and were never going to use the propane fridge, heater, or stove (yeah, I think they are crazy for never using the fridge and heater)

The only tunnels I have gone through (many times) are the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (Rt. 13)and the Hampton Tunnel (Rt 64). The CBBT will ask you at the toll booth if your gas is off. If you say no they will tell you to pull over and turn it off.  At the Hampton tunnel I stopped the first time I went through, I was asked "why are you stopping"?. I was told That campers didn't need to stop, just make sure the gas is off.  I don't know about any other tunnels as these are the only two I have experience with, It's better to check ahead then get stopped.

Here in Pittsburgh where we have several tunnels there are no issues with standard propane tanks.  That is true for the rest of the state as well.  I know driving the PA Turnpike you pass through a few tunnels as well with no regulations on the standard propane tanks.

I-95 tunnel in Baltimore, MD allows up to 10 lbs per tank of propane.
here's the regulation

Not sure what they would do if you had a half full tank or empty. I get the feeling that just having a 20 lb tank on your pup, would cause you problems.
