I have friends who recently started camping and wanted to know my favorite campground and why?

I had to think about it for a little while and it's more of a type of campground.  We like campgrounds that are wooded (no fields), water near by for kayaking or fishing, pet friendly, sites that aren't on top of each other and electric.  I'm getting a little older for roughing it.

What is your favorite and why?

My favorite campground is Clear Creek State Park in northwestern PA......

It's only 48 miles from driveway to campsite.  So much there to see and do.  It's never the same place twice.  It is the barometer by which all other campgrounds are measured.  ;D ;D

Here are more pictures...... some are over 30 years old....  http://picasaweb.google.com/1themanfromvan/ClearCreekStatePark#

The best two we have gone to were both on our trip out west this past summer.  Rafter J Bar in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Grant Village in Yellowston NP.  The scenery and wild life were awsome.  Here in Pa for SP we like Ohiopyle SP and Raccon SP is not bad as well.

My favorite is Shenango Recreation area, just North of Sharon Pa.  We usually get a water site and are able to tie up jetski/kayak right at the site for the entire trip.  It is a huge reservoir with great fishing/boating swimming.  Very clean well kept Corps of Engineers campground.  Plus its only about 40 min. from home.

Bixll,  I looked at some pictures of Shenango Rec Area and it looks really nice.  We will have to check it out for sure.  Another campground I have been wanting to goto is Pymatuning Sp is another I have been wanting to goto.  We used to go there all the time while growing up at the Jamestown campground.  I remember meeting my cousins from Ohio there and we would go fishing on the causeway at the stateline.  My dad would sit on the PA side and my Uncle on the Ohio side.

our favorite type of campground would be one near or on the beach.....we have gotten spoiled in that regard....now i kind of wrinkle up my nose if a CG isn't near a body of water of some type....  ;)....our favorite CG is Hunting Island SC( near Beaufort SC and the most popular CG in the state for a reason) and running close behind is Edisto Beach SC.....have yet to do Myrtle Beach State Park but did stay at Huntington Beach State Park and it was very nice and would give it a thumbs up as well.....throw a beach and a CG together and you get a  🙂 from me!....SCmomma

I don't know that we can narrow our choice(s) to a single favorite.
We do favor state parks in VA, NC & SC.  I'll pick one of each:
VA: Occonneechee SP.  We've camped there for years.  Great place for boating.  Clean and spacious.
NC: Millpond SP.  Some of the most beautiful waterways around.  We like taking the paddleboat there.
SC: Edisto Beach SP.  We've only been there once and that was primitive camping (tent) on the inland section, but we loved it.  I think I'd like to get the pup at the oceanfront park once.

SCMomma - we stayed at Myrtle Beach SP Thanksgiving weekend.  Overall, we were not that impressed.  IF we were to go again, we'd book the outer loop.  The sites had more room between each other.  The inner loop was Camp Sardine.

If you all don't mind, I'll map these parks on the CC members map.

DH says Spring Gulch, Lancaster, PA, we were right at the creek and they didn't bug us about a 2nd car and Watkins Glen SP, NY.

I like Knoebel's. More out of tradition, I love the amusement park and pool. Camp sites are for sleeping. Not so much for camping experience as they are so close together.

It would be too difficult for me to pick my very favorite C/G, so at best, I can list maybe half a dozen. For the most part these spots would be in the National Forest as that's usually where the fishing rivers, streams and lakes are located. The site below is a favorite - located right next to a little, fast moving stream that's ice cold and gin clear. Just sleeping next to it with the sound of the water moving over and around the rocks is a delight. And there's trout to be caught practically right out the camper door. We've had many a fresh caught trout lunch right at this spot. Then downriver, maybe a mile and a half as the crow flies, it empties into a beautiful deep blue colored lake, and right there at the mouth  of it there are some large rainbow trout to be caught while using the canoe.

The place is located in the Nantahala Nat'l Forest in western NC.

It depends... ;D

I like Shadow Bay because we get the group loop all to ourselves for a whole week.
Completely private, very quiet, lots of brush, trees, etc.

Now get this, Shingletown KOA 14 miles from Lassen.
Why?
We had all the niceties and luxuries and hookups for the week we were there.
We spent long days at the park and on the road seeing everything we could.
Back at camp we used the laundry, pool, showers, etc.

Subject to change, but currently our favorite CG is Durango Riverside Resort, Durango, Colorado...Most sites are on the Animas River...beautiful scenery from your bunk ends, fly fishing 30 feet from your site, mountains, and the possibility of bears...they pick up your garbage bags from 8-10 am every morning..great host, clean AND pet friendly..what more could you ask..Vern

McCreary's Beach Resort...Its where the wife and i met, about 20 years ago.  Now, i'm betting a lot of you wouldn't like this campground.  They tend to pack you in, but we still love going there and watching our kids do and discover the same kind of stuff we used to do when we were their age.  We've always had a water site, and are usually lucky enough to wake up to this

New owners now though, some big company, so we'll have to see what they do with park.

Manfromvan, thanks for the pics and info.  We are hoping to get there this year.  Making reservations with out knowing the sites is sometimes not good.  I will not camp with out shade.  I love the woods.  I have a farm so camping in a pasture is easy for me to do.

I don't have a "favorite" campground.  Just some that I will not be returning to.
