We are at harpers ferry for our last trip in our current pop up we got off to a real late start and this was our first trip with our first born son whos 7months old .we bought bed rails hoping they would work on our dinette and after setting up we found out they wouldnt so we used the bed rail on our pop up bed  well he fell asleep fine and was in the middle of the bed , we blocked and made sure he couldnt fall off the bed well at 3 am i am awakened to him screaming and not like how he cries in his sleep when he loses his bink but a scream like it was bad i jumped up to find he had almost wedged himself between the bed and canvas  i grabbed him up and he was still half asleep because he fell asleep immediately when we checked him over and had him lay with my wife . I felt so bad i cried i felt totally responsible for it and even though he was ok it made me sick to think what could of happened. We went out and bought those noodles to wedge between the space where he got stuck and used pillows too but after it happened i could not sleep and just watched him ect. I just wanted to warn other pop up owners with babies because our current pop up isnt big enough to put a pack and play in and putting him on that bed wasnt even our plan but it was the only option so other members with babies be careful about that space between the mattress and canvas .

Don't be hard on yourself.  Your son is fine and I'm sure you will make changes that allow him to safely sleep in the future.

For a temporary fix, you can have him sleep in a laundry basket or I know my MIL bought a thing that sits on the bed and has mesh sides about 1 foot tall.

Some parents have added plywood sides on hinges.  You stow them flat and when you set up you lift the mattress and flip them up and put the mattress back down. I am camping next weekend.  I am lucky I can set up my pack and play in the dinette area.  I am going to see about setting the dinette up and put the pack and play on top of that because the wheel well pushes the pack and play into the aisle cutting off the second bunk.

I know what people were thinking when the say the response above about putting the baby in a laundry basket.. but I can say when I was still a  tent camper. keeping the babies from rolling off an air matress was a challenge. Lay them down in a large plastic laundry basket with their blanket was the answer. I am a bit older than most of you, so the concept of pack and play didn't exist then.

Phil- The pack and play concept existed.....It just took 30 minutes and multiple parts to set up the play pen.

We have a small camper but fortunately the table and benches can be moved out. So during our last camping trip to Lake Raystown with the group we took the table and one bench outside and that left us with enough room for a pack and play for our then 8.5 month old and one bench for feeding and stuff.

I guess the current pack and play are even better now because it takes me less than 5 minutes to set up and maybe 6 minutes to tear down and put in the travel bag.

I am 34 so I know all about pack and plays.  I remember being about 10 or 12 and helping a visiting relative set up a play pen and I just remember it being the equivalent to setting up a tent with the multiple poles , fabric and other doohickeys.

Then when I was 20something working as a bellman a mother checked in before her husband.  She had a baby on her hip and 2 toddlers running around.  Being the good guy I was I offered to help set up the pack and play. I struggled like a 20 something bachelor would.  She smirked and grabbed it and in like 2 seconds she just flicked it a few times and it was open.  I was like WOW 😮

Now I'm a father and I can open it in now time.
