Is pine a good option for burning a campfire or should I be looking for harder wood?  I've heard different thoughts.

If you want a big fire fast, Pine works, but it burns very quickly.

The best is to start the file with Pine, but keep it going with other hardwood.

You may hear people say "don't burn pine".....but they may be referring to a fireplace/stove.  Pine is fine  :lmao: to burn on a campfire.

Pine puts out more cresote than other woods and it will cover your chimney if you burn a lot of it in a fireplace/stove.  Cresote in a chimney is bad 'cause if it builds up too much it can cause a chimney fire.  Burning it in a campfire you don't have to worry about that.

Since pine is a soft wood it will burn fast.

you can cook hot dogs and marshmallows with pine wood but that is about all you can cook with pine. Pine burns too fast and doesn't produce the coals and long lasting heat that you need to cook other foods because they need longer heat to be cooked thouroughly. For campfires we generally use a combination of pine and hardwoods but for cooking meals it's hardwood only.

When we went camping out west last year.  Up in the mountains the only wood you could burn was pine. Because that is all that grows in the mountains for the most part.
