So last week was my annual trip to Skinner's falls in narrowsburg NY right on the Delaware river, I have done this trip for the last 30 years never before with my pup. Was always a tent camper. Weather report looked good in the beginning of the week so we packed up and was all set to go. By wed. eve the national weather service started to issue a special wether statement " possible tornado activity in South western NY, north east pa etc. I went to NOAA web suite and started to track the storm front that was pushing east from Illinois area and as I watched the looped radar it looked like it was going to miss the area I was heading to. Thursday afternoon I called the campsite and the sun was shining bright and a beautiful 80 degrees. Hooked up the pup loaded the kids in the car and started to convoy with my 2 other Friends that were coming along with us. The weather was great the entire 90 mile trip up into the mountains and we arrived at about 515pm. We stopped in the office and checked in and headed across the big open field that is in the center of the camp sites. I backed my camper into my usual spot and unhooked the TV. Did all the usual things and popped it up. I was about to grab the awning and i noticed that the sky had started to turn Little grey the sun was gone and the cloud cover started to fall very low. All of a sudden the sky directly over our field had started to turn a deep green and grey a color i have never seen before. I took a second look and it just didn't look right to go from a bright sunny day to a very dark green in about 4 minutes, so i yelled to my kids to drop what ever they were doing and get into the TV. I told them to stay put i think a thunderstorm was coming. I had not slide the bunks out yet so i was running back to the pup to drop the top so everything would not get soaked And BAM all of sudden it was like i was in a war zone the lighting started to strike trees around the field, the wind picked up and the rain was falling side ways. It started to hail. With out warning a huge MIcroburst of wind stated from one end of the field and crossed in front of our TV and when it got to the camping sites it started lifting the large picnic benches and the 55 gal steel drums about 15 to 20 feet in the air as it ripped the benches apart i saw them swirling around in small tornado shaped motion the swirl was now heading directly back toward me and debre was starting to hit me on all sides of my body, I ducked behind my trailer so i would not get struck by a flying barrel or piece of picnic table. As i had cover behind my trailer my shoulder was up against the side and all of a sudden it started to push me forward. My trailer did a 90 degree turn and i was pushed all the way around as it happened. At this point i basically said the hell with the camper I must get to my TV to survive and made a run for it . I was running but it all was in slow motion. As i got about 2 feet from the truck a piece of wood speared me in one of my fingers and stuck there like a large splinter I managed to get the door open and then closed, out of the storm I tossed the truck in drive and speed to the bathhouse that was made out of cement got the door about one foot away and told my kids who where absolutely terrified crying and disheveled to jump out of the truck get into the bath house lye on the floor in a ball. I pushed my son out and into the bathhouse and put myself between my daughter and the wind took her hand and we were all inside thank god! about a minute later 3 trees fell on the camp site area across several tents and a rack of 20 canoes bracking most of them in half and then there was silence. It had moved on up the road north East and as i would learn later on taking trees and anything that got in its way to the ground.Took me about 15 minutes to calm my kids down  and tell them it was gone. removed the chunk of wood from my finger and bandaged it up. Told them i have to see if anyone was in the tents that the trees fell over and told them to stay put. good news is the other campers saw and heard what i did and ran to the girls bath house when it started and no one was hurt or killed. my pup folded up a little strange and i didn't care i packed it all and we headed for home in the dark. Had to reroute the trip 4 times because of down trees even had to unhook camper once and spin it around no room to back up on mountain roads. Bottom line is I will never ever ever put my kids and my self in that kind of harms way ever again. If there is the slightest chance of dangerous weather we will take a rain check period. Its not nice to fool with mother nature!

Dang, Jon.  Talk about an inaugural trip!

I can say I've only encountered something like that once and I was tent camping in VA.  I ended up in the truck soaking wet a little before midnight.  6:00am when I could see, I saw only one tent standing.  The rest had collapsed like mine - yes, I was in it when it collapsed.

Angels.  You all had angels.  You had to have.

What a story your kids will have for "what did you do this summer?"  on the first day of school.

Becky, that's so funny because my daughter said " dad when we learn weather this year I'm gonna tell the teacher I have seen a micro-burst first hand with my dad" so glad we can all laugh about it now! Best part is they are not discouraged from going camping again. I think because they never got to see me scared. Lets just say I aged about 10 years last week. They are both looking forward to the funnel cake rally in Sept. I may even take them on a weekend trip before that. If mother nature allows me to.

Oh My! Thank goodness you all are ok!  Was that the trip your kids were looking forward to for a while? I'm very glad to hear they're not soured on camping, good job holding it together.

Do you have camper insurance now (or did you before)?  That's one of the reasons I have insurance, so if anything happens or potentially is going to happen I won't have to think twice about closing up the camper.

Yes Cindy, this was our big trip. my car insurance state farm covers the camper for accident liability but not damage I have been shopping around for damage fire theft etc. insurance the last 2 months several companies in NJ will not insure my camper because even thought its in good condition its a 1984 and there is very little if any book value going to keep looking have to check with progressive this week.
Luckily when i got home I opened camper to dry out was sure I was going to see bent support bars and a bent roof but someone upstairs likes me a whole lot. just a little aluminum damage from a 55 gal steel drum (garbage can) bouncing off the front tongue area. and some paint removed from roof area. I can live with it. I put the mattresses on the roof next day and they dried perfect wipe down entire inside and no mold so still good to go. I hate to say it would have been a great excuse to buy a new camper I have been getting brochures for the last 2 months lol

Oh yea Cindy.  I forgot to mention that I never even got to set up the new camp kitchen that I made from the pics I sent you. You and everyone else will get to see it at funnel rally ( will be the unveiling of it) I think we are gonna be neighbors again on that rally. made a few great tweak's to it since you saw pics. I was going to take lots of pics in fold down to set up stages on this trip before I got tossed around by MN

Progressive has fantastic RV insurance and its dirt cheap. There is an option of you setting up a "stated replacement" value and you pay accordingly. Its dirt cheap. I pay $103 a year for $15,800 replacement coverage no matter how old the unit gets.

my auto insurance covers the camper while hooked up, even though the year may be older, the replacement value is always more, and is stated in my insurance as $xxxx.  camper insurance is while parked or set up and is based on NADA.

Progressive must have a flat rate for pop up no matter what the year is, I pay $101 also, and mine is a 2011.
Glad to hear you found something.

Best Regards,
Norm
