I've heard that state and national parks offer free boon-dock camp sites, many are location that have paying campgrounds in the same areas.  Has anyone heard of this?

I have heard about it but I know nothing about it really.  I would like to find a place but since I have a 2wd tow vehicle I would have to check out the roads first before I hook up and go camping.  I know I could drive most of the "fire roads" at my boy scout camp in 2wd but I have walked those roads a million times and I know what spots to avoid in 2wd.  I would love to find a place in PA to go boondocking for free or with a minimal charge.

the state and national parks do NOT offer free boondocking, that i'm aware of.
the National Forests, BLM and some State Forests, do offer free boondocking camping.
i know some of our Calif. state demonstration forests, have free camping sites/boondocking areas.
and the NFS and BLM has many free areas in the Sierras and other areas.

Michaux state forest and other PA state forests offer FREE boondock camping but it's not published.  You can email the state forest district office for a scan of their camping application.  Once completed, you send it back and they emailed back with a "good-to-go" reply.  I just have to pick up my permit on at their office; if you had made your request early enough, it would be mailed.

Here is a google map of the sites in the Michaux forest of all their campsites.  Not all are accessible by vehicles; some are hike in only.  But ones that are basically parking spaces or lots are open for camping with whatever you can pull into them.  I know that Tuscarora, Weiser and Sproul state forests, and they also have designated sites.

I just got back last week from 4 days of back-country camping at Monongahela National Forest and that was all free.  While the campground where we parked at was pay but when you are talking about State or National Parks / Forest the fees are very cheap.

Florida has many free sites but most are for tent camping only. There are some on Water management District or Fish & Game properties that allow campers. They don't have any power or water.

Here up in Washington State on the East side in the Colville National Forest we go camping about every other weekend and never pay a fee but we also take the fire roads up where we go. But, on the holiday weekend (like July 4 or Memorial day) ya better go early or it will be really really hard to find a place to camp cause there are campers everywhere from tent campers to huge motorhomes. but if you go high enough you get away from everyone except the others that go with you and there campers and we get the ATVs out and just ride 8)
