After getting my used older camper, I pondered purchasing insurance on it.  Everyone who I spoke to waved it off quickly and told me it was a waste of money on my cheepie camper.  But the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to look into it.  After all, my camper may not be worth much, but it's worth more than I can spend at the moment to replace it!

So I ignored others and called my insurance company.  Turns out my camper insurance with a $100/$200 deductible is only $60 a year! My camper is definitely worth that.  The peace of mind is worth that.

And, lets be honest.  Anytime you're going to involve alcohol, fire, or propane and canvas, it's probably a good idea to have insurance.  Especially after reading about someone-who-shall-remain-nameless's difficulties with the combination of firewood, a hatchet, and a thumb...

People equate Camper/RV insurance with Car Insurance - not realizing how cheap it is. Also many don't realize that your camper is covered for liability when towing as part of your car policy, but nothing else, and only while on the road.

Progressive has some of the cheapest RV policies. For my Flagstaff HW, I pay $109 for 1 year with full replacement value ($15,251 - not depreciated value -no matter the age) with NO deductable, plus RV towing, medical, vacation interruption, etc. If a tree falls on it, if the roof leaks and ruins the inside, if an forrest fire catches my trailer on fire, if some idiot hits it in the parking lot........

I don't have insurance, but I like to click buttons.

I paid $1,500 for my 1992 camper and this will be my 3rd season with it.  If it falls apart this season, I feel I have gotten my money's worth out of it and will just walk away.  It isn't even worth the hassle (to me) of writting out a check for $60.  If anything happens to it the insurance company will declare it totaled and give me a check for $500 (if that).

Like Phil said, I'm covered by my auto policy for liability when it is hooked up and going down the road.

Now if I had something worth maybe $5k or more, I'll get insurance.

You forgot beer and no first aid kit.

Well that insurance won't help with this issue.

This is what I found as well.  Too cheap for full replacement for me not to get the insurance.

We did not have insurance on our first popup because it was older.  Of course everytime a storm came through while we were camping I would worry about whether or not to drop it since I would have to pay to fix any damage.  With our NTU camper we decided to go ahead and get it insured so we could have peace of mind.

Although after reading some of the responses here, it sounds like we need to shop around before we renew this policy.  We are paying about $120 every 6-months with a $100 deductible from Safeco.  That Progressive policy sounds like one heck of a deal.

I had it on our pup and now on our htt. At under $10.00 per month it just makes sense to be safe rather than sorry.

Progressive RV policies are very good. Mine is zero deductable as they start you at $500, then reduce it $100 each year, so at year 5, there is no deductable. I have 2 Rv policies since we have a travel trailer on a seasonal site. When you have multiple policies they drop it by $200 a year.

One thing that is VERY cool and I have used it, is the RV policy comes with roadside assistance and that is for the popup and vehicle. They will even send 2 flatbeds if they need to.

Phil, you might want to double check your policy.  I just called my insurance company, and they said that no insurance company does the full replacement / original value, they only do the current cash value. (I do understand what you're saying, my renters insurance policy is similar, it covers the replacement value, not the actual value)

I also went onto the progressive website and they only offer the "actual cash value".  You may be grandfathered into something they no longer do, but it's good to be sure.

I got my insurance through USAA, which is only available to military families and their offspring (Thanks Dad!). I'm kind of over insured, as the camper is covered under my renters policy when it's stored at my parents.  Boy does that make me feel better about keeping it in the woods, lol! And the camper is covered when driving by the TV. but you never know what's going to happen while camping.  And I'd rather not have to worry about it being stolen either!

What annoyed me is that they couldn't tell me what the current value of the camper is, and I'm having difficulty finding something on the internet to calculate it.  I can guess, but I really like ASSuming.

It is correct - it is on the policy as full replacement value. That option is only available on a brand new RV, where you are the first owner from the factory. You are given a choice of Actual value, replacement value or stated value, and you do pay a small premium for it (Its $9 more).

Yes, Phil is correct. Mine is the same as well with the full replacement value, one of the things that I liked about the policy.

Cindy,

You can calculate approximate value through http://www.nadaguides.com/RVs/Camping-Trailers.

We have our PUP insured through State Farm, which also insures the house and all our vehicles. We've been with them for decades and get a lot of different discounts. The RV insurance is based on the original MSRP of $18.000 (sure am glad we didn't pay anything close to that!), so in the end we pay about $130.00/year.

When we bought the '07 Flagstaff we financed part of the purchase, so we had to carry insurance. That was the first PUP we insured. When we traded it on the '08 Niagara we had become used to it, even though we don't have to carry it now.

My two cents.....GOOD used pup's in our part of Texas is rare, (mostly TT'S here) so used prices run on the high end... bought our first Bayside a few years ago, insured minimally.  We camp heavy, television, grill, hd cords, lights, microwave, BAL,toaster, vacuum, canopy etc, etc..all stored in the pup..had her parked in the front yard with a hitch lock, under a street light...She was stolen in the middle of the night and never recovered...moral of this story is if you have a lot of money invested in your pup, insure it to the hilt...we lost our hiney...If you don't have much to lose, then roll the dice.....

Added my '99 Starcraft to the tow vehicle comprehensive policy for something like $35.00 back about 10 years ago.  A couple, three  years later (don't remember exactly), got caught out in a hail storm.  Anyway, the policy had a two hundred deductable clause and the check I got in hand was for $1350.00 - Repaired it myself for less then a hundred bucks!

Thanks for posting the link. I just wanted to point out that the period at the end of the link needs to be removed to view the page. Very helpful information, thanks again  🙂
