Does anyone cook with a dutch oven?  Any good recipes of suggestions?
Are the more expensive ones better?

We have a 12inch / 12qt DO we have cooked ham with sweet potatoes and pineapple, ziti, apple cobbler etc
The larger size works great when at a rally for pot luck. I purchased mine from sportsman's guide for around $30. on special. this is the one I have.

I do recommend one that is pre seasoned. As far as recipes you can just type in DO recipes on the web

We have a 12in deep, a 10in.  and an 8in. All are Lodge cast iron. The best web site I've found is Byron's Dutch Oven Cooking. Great recopies and instructions.  I've cooked several breakfasts, many cobblers and crisps, and even made the chicken enchiladas. There's nothing better than cooking in a Dutch Oven when camping. Next weekend on our final trip of the season I'm doing a barbecue brisket, I'll post how it comes out.

Joe, here's an awesome breakfast.

Here's the enchiladas

And for a easy cobbler I use a canned pie filling of choice and top it with a matching flavored muffin mix.

I have a 12" DO as well.  Spare Ribs are awsome in the DO.  Fall right off the bone.

I've seen these dutch ovens but have never used one.  What can you do and not do?  If it's an oven, can you bake biscuits or brownies?  Do you put it in the fire or only use charcol?  What else can you tell me?

I love DO cooking, I will admit I was scared to death when I first started but now I can't seem to break away from it. It's almost a demand when we go camping ...all I here is "Whatcha makin' in the cast this time Wolfie?"

Beerlifter,
I like the do cooking table.  Is that homemade or bought?

We have a 12-inch Lodge Dutch oven and we LOVE cooking in out D.O.  We also use Byron's dutch oven recipe website.

We've made:  Peach cobbler, pork chops and rice, beef stroganoff, chicken pot pie, lasagna, and ribs.

We are currently waiting on our 8-inch D.O we've ordered from Lodge.

This site here gives a brief description of DO cooking and a look into the different methods of DO cooking. It also gives a break down of how to regulate the temp in the DO, as far as # of briquets needed. Links to some recipies also.

I loves me my Dutch Oven!

I might be wrong on this, I have been known to be on ocassion, but I am of the opinion that you can cook anything in the DO that you can cook in a regular oven, provided of course, it's small enough to fit into your DO.

I have a cheap 10" DO from Harbor Freight. Would like to get a good 12" some day. My favorite part of camping is the outdoor cooking. I have a smoker in the backyard, many weekends we make dinners in the DO & smoker. When my DSs were in the Boy Scouts they always loved the DO meals.
Last week the weather was bad but I promised a peach cobbler in the DO. I stuck it in the oven and made it inside. Just as tasty but a little less clean-up.

PBS has a great program called Taste of History in which Chef Walter Staib reproduces foods from the 18th and early 19th century all from the hearth.

Dutch oven users would love seeing this one!  Check your local listings.

We love our DO! We use it as an oven. Our favorite to cook is personal pizzas or fresh rolls/bread for pasta night. Also cinnamon rolls go like hot cakes for breakfast. I also agree that Byron's dutch oven cooking recipies is an awesome website for recipies.

Our camping life revolves around what we are making in the dutch next.  I started using it in the Boy Scouts and now show my Cub Scouts how to use it.  My wife has even gotten to the point of taking control of who gets to use it next, which is ok.  She has made some delicious meals.

Here is a link to a website with 2700 dutch recipes:  http://www.justdutchovenrecipe.....index.html :chef:
