Don't forget to talk to your State officials and check to see what licenses you may need and what the different fishing seasons are for your area/State...

Also as someone starting out..  keep things simple..  you only need one rod, a few different lures and a small tackle box...
I wouldn't say buy a kids setup, like they sell at wally world,  but someplaces may have an intermediate combo set up ..

Now these aren't by any means  great rods and reals, but they will get you started ...  A lot of it depends on how much you want to spend ...

I'll second the no need to spend extra cash on a set up to start out with.  My dad caught more smallmouth and trout on his yellow aluminum eagle claw rod and shimano reel than I'll get on my expensive stuff.

Some of your local parks might offer fishing classes (for example, Delaware's State Parks have surf fishing and driving classes).  Have fun and remember that fishing is called 'fishing' for a reason, as opposed to 'catching'!

my father in law caught a 10lb 13 oz bass on a Zebco 202 from Walmart less than 20 bucks...You don't have to have a lot of expensive equiptment...Find you something affordable at Walley World, or Academy etc... Would suggest closed faced reel to start off with, bait cast reels take a while to master and could hurt your first time out experience...have fun buddy, wolfie
If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask away....

I've been using Zebco 202 and 404 reels ever since I was a kid and for the occasional fisherman they work just fine.
