Handheld GPS for GeoCaching

I am considering a DeLorme PN-40 Handheld unit primarily for geocaching.  I will use it for driving some and hopefully a backpacking trip in the future.  The GPSstore.com has the PN-60 for $30 more but, I have set my limit at 300 and I'm sticking to it.

The reviews look real good but, I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts.

For $30 more I would get the 60. We have the 40 but its quirky ay times. Plus the 60 had better battery life.

Thanks for the input.  Just last night a friend of mine told me to compare the Delorme to a Garmin Dakota 20.

I wish I could demo them for the week to see the pros and cons of each one.

I've also been kicking around the idea of picking up a handheld unit.  So many choices out there it's difficult for me to narrow it down.  I think Cora would get a kick out of geo caching (we'll call it treasure hunting for now).  I have to do some further reading to find a user friendly and water proof unit to take on the kayak that doesn't cost too much.

Marc...check out http://www.thegpsstore.com they seem to have pretty good prices.  I have been shopping around for the last 2 years, This year were doing it.  Spring is around the corner and I want to have it for our first trip in late March.  We can't wait to start geocaching.

They have the Magellan eXplorist GC Handheld GPS for $140, it's waterproof and gets good reviews.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'm going to dig around a bit and see if I can save some pennies for something this spring.  I did see in my Cabela's sale flyer for next week that they are offering the Garmin Dakota 20 Bundle for $249.99 down from the regular $399.99.

I ended up with the Dakota 20 bundle for 249.99 from Cabela's.  It seems pretty good so far.  The only thing I was disappointed about was that you can not use it for travel unless you buy another map program for $80.  I called Garmin to verify.  I told them that it would be a great thing to mention on the box.

Otherwise it's pretty easy to use and seems accurate as well.

Anyone have any thoughts on using the built-in GPS app that comes with the Droid smartphone?  DS is thinking of starting geocaching but we'd like to keep costs down as much as possible; he has the GPS app on the phone, wondered if that's suitable?  Please excuse my newbie-ness!

One of our friends has a droid, and that's exactly what she does, and we use our iPhones. The phones are definitely accurate enough. We have yet to search for a cache and not find it.

The only drawback is that you have to either have a Internet connection to use the full features provided by the phones or have done your cache research in advance and use some of the offline tools.

The reviews for phone apps is pretty good. If you go to the Geocaching.com website they have the reviews and directions on how to use with there website.

Check out c:geo for the Droid. It's free but you won't see it mentioned on geocaching.com

We have 2 GPSs.  A Magellan Triton 500 and a Magellan Explorist 400.  The Triton gets us close and the droid/iPhone (depending on what DH is carrying) gets us even closer.  I have no idea what apps he uses though, I'm still using a good 'ole flip phone.

Me, too! I call it my Dumb Phone since it is "only" a phone. I don't need to stay that connected, especially when camping.  ::)
