Seeing how I brought this up in another thread, and one response was in regards to the kids not being able to enjoy a drive-in ..  Here is one of many links about drive-ins, this one will even give you a list of drive-ins open or closed in your State or Province ..

http://www.drive-ins.com/

Example, zip 14301 (Niagara Falls, N.Y.)  http://www.drive-ins.com/dbdis.....search.y=0

Just enter your zip/postal code ...  for Canada you have to select the "database" tab and then just change the "Country" to Canada and click "go", it will list all the drive-ins left in Canada as well as some closed one's ...

There are two drive-in theaters about 1 1/2 hrs from our house and I'd love to take the kids.  They have never experienced a movie on the real big screen.  We tried twice but they were calling for showers both times.  The building at one was destroyed during floods this year and I'm not sure if they are rebuilding.

Several theaters that I know have flea markets during the week for additional income.
I remember going to the drive-in as a kid and paying one price for the whole car load.

We had a drive in theater on base in Rota, Spain.  I took a young(ish) lady who was on temporary duty to my division from Italy out to it one night.  She'd never been to one before.

We have 2 drive-ins within 5 miles of us.  Twin-Hiway has 2 screens and Dependable has 4 screens.  They are a lot of fun.  On the weekends in the summer they are packed full.  We put a air mattress in the truck bed for the kids and the adults sit in camp chairs.  We bring a battery powered stereo for the audio. (both places transmit the sound over fm radio.  We go 4 or 5 times over the summer.

Some of my best childhood Summertime memories are the family trips to the drive-in.  I'm REALLY dating myself when I say this, but I remember seeing John Wayne (my dad's favorite),Jerry Lewis and Elvis Presley. The kids would usually wear pajamas.  My mom would pack a picnic basket full of sandwiches and treats. Getting popcorn from the concession stand was a real treat. Great Memories!

Anyone in the Baltimore, southern PA area, Bengie's in Middle River, MD is still open (http://www.bengies.com).  The owner is a bit of a conspiracy theory paranoid so you have to put up with his draconian house rules, but the place is still going strong (they sold out when Cars 2 premiered there over the summer).  This weekend is Happy Feet Two, Puss In Boots and Tower Heist.  They even rent electric heaters for the car on these cold nights, as long as you're prepared for them to hold your driver's license until you give it back.  We can take all 3 kids and get in for about $25 and see 3 movies.  Try that anywhere else.  And for another $10 you can even get a pass to bring your own food if you want, although the snack bar really isn't bad.

The Drive In at Rota, Spain was the only such theater on a naval installation in Europe.  It has the capacity for 500 vehicles and an additional 200 in stadium seating (that's a nice way for saying bleachers).

Prior to Armed Forces Television on base it was pretty much the entertainment capital of the place.  A family picnic atmosphere prevailed.

I went to a drive in theater once......Warwick NY I think.  It was pretty cool.  I like to do things to experience them.  I would love to bring my son to one (maybe the one in MD Breadbox mentioned).  Unfortunately my son will probably think a drive in Theater is putting a large screen TV and surround sound in the garage.

My kids love it.  They can run around, make noise and be kids and still see the movie.  Feature #1 is always a family movie, #2 is usually either a comedy or an action movie like Transformers, and if there's a thrid movie, it's something more adult oriented (thriller, rom-com, Hangover-type comedy.) Just make sure you can turn off or cover all the lights on your vehicle and you know how fast 5 mph is even if your speedometer doesn't register that low. And if you have an SUV, be prepared to park in the back.  It's easy to get to, about 10 minutes from I-95.

Not to long ago a friend of mine who works for a Council in NJ sent me this link Cub Scout camp out at a drive-in at Shankweiler's Drive in near Allentown PA.  It looks really cool.  I forwarded it to my BIL who's son is in Cub Scouts.  I need to remember this for when my son is in Cub Scouts.

when I was a young guy back in Pa., we had Spotlight 88 Drive-in. As a teenager we would
always try to sneek in by hiding in the trunk of my friends '56 Chevy. I can't understand how we were always caught.

We usually go to Bengie's several times each season.

As for the rules, I'm guessing that you are talking about the food permit.  They are not so bad once you understand that they make hardly anything off of the movie itself.  They certainly do not make enough money off the movie to keep the place open.  This is the same for all movie theaters.

No, I'm talking about getting yelled at for driving too fast when the speedometer hasn't moved off zero, or being told to move the car because the front bumper is a foot too far forward, or having to listen to the talk about the supposed conspiracies the Baltimore Sun and Royal Farm Stores have against the owner, and the constant admonition to "Read the House Rules."  It's a bit too 1984 for my taste.  I actually like that you can bring in outside food.  It's a great idea.  Last summer our 8-year-old wanted her birthday party at the drive-in.  We brought pizza and a cake.  It was great; then we got yelled at for leaving the rear hatch on the Volvo up too long, and this was before the show even started.  Like I said, if you can put up with the rules, it's a great place.

Ahh, I've never heard the conspiracies.  But I have heard him complain about the Royal Farm.  Those lights are certainly bright and make it hard to see the screen well at times.

I've never had any of the other issues.  We do have a SUV that has to be in certain spaces.  And the hatch doesn't go above the roof line, so that could be it.

That's about the only place that we go to the movies.  It is the only place that we feel it is worth the price to see movies.  I can't bring myself to spend $10 for a single movie.

We love the drive-in! I've been very fortunate that I've had one close by in all three of the states we've lived in. It's my favorite way to watch first run movies. We used to go to the North Fort Myers Drive-In, and the Naples Drive-In when we lived in Fl (both gone now, sadly). The Milford Drive-in in NH (it's the best, great playground for the kids, fab snack bar, and super helpful projectionist-he even gives tours of the projection booth)The one nearby now, is the Rustic Drive-In in Smithfield, RI. It used to be an X-rated Drive-In 😮 , so if you take a good look at the vintage entrance sign, you'll notice that it resembles a certain part of the male anatomy...and once you do, you can't NOT see it :-[ . Other than that it's fantastic!  🙂

I totally agree.  I just checked: For the 5 of us to see The Loxax, it would be $43, before concessions.  I've never had it cost more than $25 for all of us at Bengies, at that was for the premier showing of Cars 2.

Lancaster, NH
In the western lung of the white mountains.

Over the last 5 years they have progressed to be quite the Drive-IN !
it is radio frequency tune in, so kids ca use the cheap dollar store radio/earphone tuners.
has a great and affordable snack bar. owners are super nice.
not sure now, but 2 years ago they had a dry-camping area on each side for small campers and TT. which still allowed solid viewing. ( at a cheap price)
ALWAYS one price for single or double features.
open in late spring until late fall.
dozens of CG within 20 minutes or less radius...

We're real lucky I guess, there are two here in the Hudson Vallet that are about 20 mins. from the house. That's the same time it wld take to go to a theater. I've heard some rumblings about the Hyde Park drive in getting National Landmark status, not sure if that was just people talk. It's right across the road from the FDR estate, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. That is a real nice trip in itself.

Here's something I found:

happy movies!
