I work in an office building that has 4 floors.  When the leftover food from a lunch meeting is put in the cafeteria it is up for grabs.  But what about when you visit another department and there is food in their "area"? Most departments have an area where someone will put the leftover Halloween candy, donuts, bagels, pretzels, birthday cake, etc.

I was just at someones desk in a different part of the building in a different department and in their food "area" they had a box of cookies.  White chocolate chip with madadamian nuts.  MMmmmm.  Can I take one?  It was clearly in "their" area just like my department has "our" area, but it was still a public area.

Can I take a cookie?

If it matters, I do bring food and put it in my departments "area" at times as well, I am not just a taker.

I would ASK someone...  but I would not just take it.
or casually mention that "oooh those look good, you should come down to our area one day"

etc

One would like to assume that extra food would be made available in an area that's most relevant to that department's employees; I think they should certainly have first dibs.  But, if it's not eaten, I don't think that it should be thrown away; make it available to whoever might enjoy it.

We have different depts that will bring in food for their dept only and occasionally invite us/security to join in and enjoy the food. Also have a break room that has food show up and it is up for grabs by anyone that wants it.

Years ago I was an Assistant Food Services Director for Aramark.  Aramark is a contract company.  I worked in the Business Dining Division.

When departments have meetings food purchased comes out of their budget.  In essence, you're asking, "If my neighbor goes to the store, pays for deli items and has leftovers on the counter, can I have them?"

The leftovers are usually left within the department as a courtesy to those members.

I can speak for our department, anyone is welcome.  But then again, we are behind a door so it isn't like a million people are grabbing a pretzel.  So that is why I started the question.  I don't mind, but will others mind?

I like the people who say take another lap and grab the cookie  :smore: when nobody is looking  O0

I say yes it is in a public area, but at the same time I would ask who ever i was talking to just so i was not "that guy". I work in an office where we put the food out after a meeting for all and it is like attack dogs half the time begging for scraps. I also think some people smell the food is out and just show up.
