How does everyone feel about Valentines Day?  Do you do anything out of the ordinary or not?

I'll start by saying that I personally enjoy any occasion that celebrates love, whether that be the romantic or platonic type.  I like to tell my family (immediate and extended (such as sisters)) how much I appreciate them and why.  I usually send sisters and our parents cards with a personal message.  For my DH and DS's (who don't currently have girlfriends), I like to make a special dinner and dessert.

We host a formal dinner every year for 4 couples (different couples each year). We request they dress formally and do a full 6 course dinner and champagne cocktails. We usually pay a photographer, then a few weeks later invite everyone back to go over the pictures.

And I get to flex my culinary muscles and give my skills a much needed workout.  Other than Halloween, this is my favorite event since I get to plan the menu, the guest list, etc.  It's like a great puzzle I have to figure out. First it's the guest list - which personalites will get along? Then we take those egos and build a menu around that.  Then it's the play list - music is critical to a successful dinner party, and it's often overlooked.  I love all the details and planning, not to mention the hours of cooking I get to do too.  I'm sure Steve A. will understand! :chef:

Oh gosh - LOVE your mention of music!  I will make a separate thread.

I (and my wife) am not a big fan of Valentines day.
We don't get each other flowers.  Don't like that they die so every now and then we get each other plants or trees.  They hopefully live a while, lol.
We don't care for candy, chocolate, etc. and dinner will be whatever we feel like.  Nothing special.

We do get things for the kids and for the wife and I from the kids.  Nothing special, just stuff kids get their parents but we pay for it.

Pete and Phil, I have no desire to get to NJ (no offense, lol)  but if we get up that way, I need to find a way to stop by for a meal.
The way you two talk about food makes me hungry.  ;D

Funny you should say that.... I lived in Orlando for 3 years and I will never do it again....  :lmao:

At this stage in our lives, its not about owning "stuff". We don't wear jewelry, we don't drive fancy cars, we don't take expensive vacations, and we live in a small old house in a depressed town on the way back up. We don't equate self-worth (yours or ours) with weekly salary and are not caught up in the relentless pursuit of keeping up with the Jones'. We do appreciate the finer things in life (and we do own a few of them), but we would rather spend our lives doing things rather than collecting things. Instead of spending the money on McMansions, bar scenes and stuff that just ends up in storage somewhere, we spend our money on social times, dinner parties and outings with friends. We believe it is better to show off a collection of friends and experiences than a collection of stuff. I think it can mostly be summed up by my favorite motto: The happiest people don't have the best of everything, they just make the best of everything that they have! - and dinners with friends is a huge part of it.

I go camping every year!! Me and the DW don't care much for celebrating Valentines. The camp out I attend is for dads and their sons/grandsons! It is jokingly know as the He Man Woman Haters Weekend Campout. I will be leaving before daylight on Thursday and returning home late Sunday night. My DW is awesome, she tells me every year to have fun!

I'm crashing Phil & Pete's dinner! 😉  Sounds delicious, and I like the 3-bites idea.

My husband may or may not be in Valentine's Day mode with two of my women friends coming to visit. He'll be surrounded with the three of us and will probably enjoy Valetine's Day in a locked room by himself.  We don't go overboard for Valentine's Day usually, but this year we saved a substantial gift card for a really nice restaurant on the Chattahoochee River (Ray's on the River). Maybe the 4 of us will go.  ???

We serve them on the Japanese Soup spoons.
