Anybody use a flat garden hose with their camper, I always seem to be rolling up my regular garden hose and it always kinks and takes up quite a bit of  storage space. I understand its really easy to drain the flat hoses too so no water mess inside the camper after use. Just wondering if anyone uses the flat style garden hoses that come with reels etc. and what you thought about them or how your rate them. which one would you recommend.  see a few on amazon ranging from 18.00 to 100.00 I have been trying to find one in a local store for pick in northern NJ with no luck looks like a may have to pay for shipping. I tried sears, Kmart, home depot, Lowe's and grainger. I will check home hardware and ace this weekend

I thought that seemed cool too, but didn't see anything for use with drinking water (I didn't look super hard, but that's why I have a regular hose now and not a flat one).

I know we all drank from the hose as kids, but I don't want to tempt fate anymore than I already have  :tease:

Cindy , I probably should have clarified that i don't use the water system in my camper. It's all there but every time I closed the beds it would want to sheer off the faucet head so I removed it and put a blank over the hole. I usually bring 2- 5 gallon col-lapsable water jugs full from home in the TV, but i do use the water at the site for camp kitchen washing hands rinsing face etc. even though I think the hose would be safe for consumption I agree why temp fate, why risk putting carcinogens from the hose into our body's. But it would be for everything but consumption at the camp site.

I did a quick search and found flat rv drinking hoses on line at Adventure RV net, don't know how well they work.

For me, I'd be interested in one of the ones with the reel attachment, like this one.  I'd hope the reel would help drain the water from the hose, and keep everything in a nice small package. But at over $40 it seems a bit high.

My fire department has a couple flat hoses that we use for fire prevention with kindergarten kids. We have the kids squirt at a house that has windows fith flames that flap down when hit by water.  We have had bad luck with them.  They don't seem to last as long.  We bought the flat hose because they look like our regular hose on the rigs.  They just don't seem to hold up as well as a regular garden hose.  Dragged on blacktop they get holes in real easy.  And have had the ends fall off after a few uses more than once.  We ended up going back to regular garden hose.

Thanks for the real-life review, BigDawgGang.

I really like the idea of a flat hose, especially the ones that include a reel to wind it on for storage. I've been leery of them, since the reviews I've seen have been very mixed for all but the most expensive hoses. And I'm not too keen on paying $50 or more for a hose that isn't going to be used all that often! I also haven't seen any that are certified safe for drinking water.

I drain the hose and connect the ends and store it in the spare tire cover. It's easy enough to get at when I need it and it's not in the way the rest of the time. It also helps that our spare tire cover has a zipper running across the middle, to allow for easy tire inflation checking  ;D

We had one like the first one that mtn_bikers posted.  It looked a lot like that, but came on a reel, so it may or may not be the same.  The hose actually has two chambers for water to flow through, so it would look like an "8" if you were cut it.

I first started to notice the seam in the middle starting to separate (making it an "0" instead of an "8").  Shortly after that, we spring a leak.  One of our friends had the same hose and had identical problems.

Back when I bought my first popup (in 1974) it came with 25ft of flat, drinking water rated hose that I am still using today. The next year I purchased 100ft of the same hose and am still using it. It is really easy to coil up and store compared to the rigid hoses you get today specially on those colder days when you are packing up.

The hoses with the wind up holders are not very durable and tend to develop leaks in a short time. Several of my camping buddies bought them and they have lasted only one or two seasons before developing pin hole leaks.

Is there no "Edit" button for posting on this forum?

Anyway, I searched around and came up with this hose.

Alex aren't you running something 250ft of hose mounted on a rollup at the back of your trailer ???

I think the flat hoses are gimmicky and kink easy which would just fustrate me.  I have 2 25 foot hoses that don't seem to take up much room under one of my benches.

Alex, I bet your flat hoses from the 70's are still working today.....but I bet they are much thicker than today's flat hoses.  Just look at today's water bottle -vs- a water bottle from 10 years ago.  They are much thinner.

I see this is kind of an old thread but I wanted to reply with my recent experience. My FIL gifted a flat hose to me this last year. He had used it with his motor home for years but recently sold the MH so gave me some of his gadgets.
This thing, in my opinion, is great. It was made by Toro, it's in a self contained reel that is approx. 1 1/4" thick x 8" wide x approx 11" long, it has a 50 ft, blue colored, sort of cloth hose in it.
Knowing that it was quite old I expected it to leak or have other problems so I just continued using my white RV Hose.
A couple of weeks ago I was at a site where I needed a longer hose to reach our camper. I got it out of the storage and unrolled it from the reel. Hooked everything up and it worked perfectly. No leaks, no kinks, nothing wrong with it at all. The best part was when we were ready to pack it in. I simply unhooked it from the camper and water supply, put it back on the reel case in the correct position and started reeling. As I was reeling it up the excess water just came out of the other end. It's nice and compact and very well designed so it's definitely a keeper in our rig.

Hoping someone garbage picked it and maybe cut it down and recycled it for somethin.g

I did a little more searching and found this one at camping world. http://www.campingworld.com/sh.....-hose/1516
It's only 25ft though were the toro one we have is 50ft

Price doesn't look too bad but I have no idea of the quality.
The Toro one I got from my FIL seems to be of very good quality and I'm sure it's probably at least 20 years old.

Did not look correctly - there is a 25 or 50 ft option.....

With reel..
25 foot is 29.99
50 foot is 39.99

And they have JUST the hose for 22.03 or 31.48

Good catch. I didn't see that. I do like the one I have so will have to keep this in mind should mine ever fail.

I have always thought about buying one of these.  I get tired of the kinks in my hose as well.

I looked around for a flat hose locally but didn't find one. I figured if Walmart & Lowes don't carry them then there was probably issues with them that the stores no longer want to be bothered with.

I think these are a specialized item, made more specifically, for RV's, Boats, etc. Perhaps that is why lowes or walmart stores don't carry them. I don't think that there are issues with them, there certainly isn't any problem with the one we have that is more than 20 years old. It's simply a demand issue that Lowes & Walmart type stores won't take on a low demand inventory item. This is why their RV departments are somewhat limited. These stores are good for a few quick items but not necessarily for the RV specifc items.
