PUP door/roof issues?

Guess I should start a new thread so things don't get confusing.  I mentioned my next project is my PUP door.  Or is it my roof?  When I lower my door it's about an inch too long and won't meet up with the bottom part of the door.  I think the roof isn't high enough, but, how high is high enough?

It's a 1996 starcraft, and the canvas was not well maintained.  I'm afraid of cranking it too much and breaking a lift cable, or ripping the brittle canvas.

The Thingette's have both responded on another post...

Cindy, be sure camper is level, it helps doors close and open properly, whether the pup is up and the screen is attached, or whether it is down and it's just the door itself, it does make a difference.

Make sure the roof it high enough. It may need to be adjusted. Also, install the door and attach the canvas before putting the canvas up on the bunkends. It makes a difference for us.

Thanks ladies, for the suggestions.  I haven't checked for myself, but my dad said the camper is level.  I assume it is because the door closes well and didn't before.

I'll definitely try undoing all the canvas, and see if I can get it up any higher.. (again, how high is too high?  the manual simply says not to over crank) and out the door down and THEN do the beds and the velcro sides.

2 pc.  2/3 up top with a double hinge, 1/3 down bottom.

Here is a link to setting the pup up. At the end it shows how the door works.

You know how the inside of the door has that double hinge where it goes down, and is supposed to latch against the top inside of the door?  It won't get close to the inside of the roof like it's supposed to.

I'm cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs :victory:

Sorry, I can't help with this.  I've only had colemans which have a 1 piece door.

My question would be ... is the roof all the way up ...?

Well ... the big stabilizer debate carries on here, too!  In the video she says the first thing is to lower the stabilizers.  Starcraft says thats a no-no ... their owner's manual says specfically not to have them down and engaged when raising or lowering the roof.  Says the stabilizing action might cause a twist and cause damage to the lifter system.

A lot of pups have a cable that pulls tight when you get the roof up all the way and keeps you from overextending it and tells you when it's up all the way.  Ours is next to the streetside front lift arm.  Make sure you're putting it up all the way.

Roof up first, then stabilizers down, pull bunks out, put door in, canvas stretch over bunks.

Even if you have a height guide, it can stretch too.  I don't have your pup or I would measure the height it should be.

Is this video endorsed by Starcraft?  If no, then I don't think we can hold everything that they do to be true.

But it is a decent illustration on how to setup a starcraft with the 2/3 door and the bunks....I didn't know that is how the bunk supports went on.

Umm, no, it's not endorsed, I'm sure! Stabilizers should never be touching the ground while the roof is going up or down.

I agree that it's a decent guide for Starcraft-specific bunk supports and any that use the split door. I've never owned one with a split door, so nothing to add. There have been a lot of good suggestions.

Like anything else with a new/used PUP, it takes time to familiarize yourself with its model-specific features and general setup. We've owned five PUPs over the last 30+ years and each one has had its differences. We spent a good bit of time with each one setting up and tearing down in the driveway until we're sure we know the drill.

That's like my brother suggesting I drive around with it to make sure I'm comfortable with it.  Nah.  I already own the camper, too late to back out now.

I've set it up once.  I plan on learning the drill while camping.  sink or swim baby.

thanks everyone for your great suggestions.  I haven't been able to try anything yet because I've been on the go all weekend, and I've got to drive to go visit my camper.  But I can't wait to try all the suggestions.

I do think it might be a good idea to video tape me setting it up, it might be fun to have a 'what not to do' video!

OK, having read your roof post, the reason your door doesn't work is because the roof side is rotted and is sagging.  You can't tell just by looking at it, but if it's like ours was, your awning is all the structure left over there.  Ours came supported by 2x4's as well.
