Looking through a camping catalog.  What are bearing buddies, do you have them, do I need them?

You don't NEED them.  You may just want them.  They are a way to grease your wheel bearings easily.  This particular brand I believe was originally made for boat trailers.

I have the EZ Lube hubs on mine.  It came from the factory that way.  I love 'em.  It is easy to change the grease.  I do it at least twice a year.  Not a lot of miles but I burned up  a couple of bearings on our landscape trailers and had to replace the whole axle at 1500 a pop  :banghead:.  So now I am paranoid and change the grease more often than once a year.  Since I got the pup I keep them in fresh grease.  Nothing like breaking down with that when your a ways from home.

But back to your original question.  You can pack your bearings the old fashioned way with no worry's and not have to buy anything.  There are a lot of people that prefer to it that way.

If you have an EZ Lube axle, take advantage of it.
I replaced my bearings shortly after buying my Pup.
Now all I need to do is jack up the wheel, take off the dust cap, and pump grease into the fitting while spinning the wheel slowly. If the grease comes out discolored or otherwise questionable looking I'll pull them out. If the grease is good, bearings are good and I'm good. 😉

If you have brakes I would not recommend them. Bearing buddies are spring loaded chambers with a grease fitting in them that take the place of your dust caps. You fill the chamber with grease and when the hub turns grease is added as needed. The excess grease is pushed out through the seal on the back of the hub. On trailers with brakes the grease will contaminate the shoes and your brakes will fail.

What kind of grease do you use?

I use Valvoline Duralube, but any high-temperature, high-pressure grease designed for disk brakes will work fine. The Valvoline is a synthetic blend.

Autozone, Advance, Wal-Mart, etc., all carry excellent wheel bearing grease in small (approx. pint size) cans. A can lasts a long, long time.
