I never worried about his before but we live in Wisconsin and we aren't required to register a  trailers under 3000 lbs.  If I am going to travel to Florida would I need to register my PUP and get plates when traveling through states that require trailers to be registered?

Not necessary.  But to avoid hassles, if you've got a title/insurance papers, it'd be good to carry along.

To not go through the hassle of being pulled over, to then being let go once the officer confirms that your car is from your state, so the trailer doesn't have to be registered, I would register it anyway.......

I would print out and bring a copy of the law that says your trailer is exempt from tags.

For some reason I am picturing a tag that would go on your trailer that simply says "Exempt" and may have the states name on it.  I don't know how or why I am thinking/picturing that.

I would envision a lot of hassle, possibly multiple times per state. I'd register it and get a tag.

Florida gets enough tourists that I doubt it would be a problem. Do carry paperwork Steve recommends in the event you get pulled over for something else though.

I would do something.  Here in MD, everything has to be registered.  A former co-worker of mine was suddenly transferred to MD from GA just after he bought a new car there.  GA didn't use temporary plates, just one with the dealer's name on it.  About a week after moving here he was pulled over and told it didn't matter what GA did, he needed a plate of some kind in MD.  He had to immediately go to the MVA and register his car; then go to court to have the fine and violation taken away.
