How can we organize one for a Rally?

I was getting some BBQ at a restaurant yesterday and they had a TV on with a BBQ cook off.  Each contestant was given a piece of meat and people grilled it, smoked it, spiced it, Sauced it, etc. 

Can we do this at one of the Rallies?  Would anyone be interested in doing this?  Maybe everyone bring and cook their own racks of ribs for the Pot Luck.  Then each person who eats can vote on which ribs are the best.

Our neighborhood holds an annual bbq cookoff each Memorial Day weekend.  There’s usually a theme, but there’s judging and homemade trophies or ribbons.  Which each chef proudly boasts about for the following 364 days…LOL.

I’d be happy to brainstorm with others on this topic and share how our’s has been handled.  It’s a lot of fun (and smack talk, which I know this group doesn’t do much of  ::)

What do we think the easiest "Theme" would be for our first time? 

I think Ribs could be simple.  Anyone who wants to participate can cook the ribs however they want.  Smoke them, grill them, bake them, and use whatever flavoring they want.  Store bought sauce, home made sauce, rubs, smoke, whatever.

I’m in. How would we do judging? Maybe all the non cooks would cast a vote by ballot?  And all the samples would be in identical, numbered containers? The only ones who would know the number would be the cooks (there would be a master list of course, in a sealed envelope.) 

Also would we have to cook them at the campout, or could they be precooked and reheated? But, No cheating and buying at a restaurant.

When we do our neighborhood cook off, everyone in attendance gets a raffle ticket (labeled 1 per category). Each entrant’s food is put out on a long table with a number identifying it and a numbered jar is next to it.  Everyone goes up, takes their serving and then decides who they want to vote for and goes back to the table and drops their raffle ticket into corresponding numbered jar. Once voting for that category is done,  the jars are collected,  and the jar with the most raffle tickets is deemed the winner. 

Ours is a BBQ cookoff with multiple categories: beef, chicken, pork, sides, & desserts. We space it out over the afternoon,  ie: pork has to be on the serving table by 2 pm and votes cast by 230 pm, chicken is out by 230 pm and votes collected at 3pm, etc.

We ask participants to plan to make enough food for small portions for X# attendance.  Burgers are usually slider sized or regular burgers cut into 4ths. Chili could be portioned into Dixie size cups, so you can get a taste, but not full meal portion from each entry.
There can be multiple category options with chili from regular, spicy, chicken, vegan, children’s, etc. Rob And I would love to help run this!
