I'm thinking about trying out the dutch oven this weekend so I'm less likely to screw it up at the Spring Opener.
Can I just put the coals on my home grill rack with the dutch oven on top and leave the grill lid open?
You really need something flat for the legs to rest on. A baking pan or cookie sheet will do. Also I recommend using a dutch oven liner (available at places like WalMart) they make clean up much easier.

This is what I made. Old plow disk and scrap 1/2 inch steel rod. Welded bolts to rod and welded nuts to bottom of disk. This made the legs removable for storage. Later I welded a horse shoe to the side to hold cooking utensils.
I'm not sure I know what I'm doing but that was some damn good lasagna.
sprayed the oven

How long do the bricks last? Do I need to add more sometimes?
Yes sometimes you will. Wind, outside temperature, and brand of charcoal will all factor in if you will need to add more. I usually just fill the chimney and go from there!!
I try to block the wind as much as possible as it is your worst enemy. I think I have only had to fire up another batch of coals three or four times in my 4 or 5 years of DO cooking.
The lasagna looked awesome..........any leftovers, there always better the next day!!!
