I have never used one and have little clue what I'm doing but just received a brand new Boy Scouts of America Engraved 6-Quart Cast Iron Dutch Oven by Lodge Logic from a group where I volunteer.  I'm very excited.  The French Creek Spring Opener could be memorable.  :omg:

In my many years of camping, I've never purchased one because I'm afraid it will rust when stored in the campers and it's damp.  I'll have to figure it out.

Joe, I learned that if you put a folded paper towel on two sides of the lip edge, then put the lid on will prevent the grease on the inside from going rancid and it will let the inside breath and not rust as well! Happy Dutch Oven Cooking! Or come to our southeast rally and we'll feed ya some good D.O. cooking!  :baseballhat:  I need a smiley face with a fire helmet!

Joe, that is a nice DO, especially with the Scout emblem on the lid. Check out this little place I know, ww.CanvasCampers.com, for some recipes, tips, and tricks. I heard there are some nice folks om there willing to help.  ;D

What's 40 more pounds at this point? I'm not giving up the camp kitchen, 10x10 canopy, 2 burner stove, crock pot, 12v blender, 40c coffee pot, weber grill, griddle or other stuff I use.

A little seasoning and it will last forever and not rust.

In my years of using Dutch Ovens I have found the best way to keep it from rusting is to use it, use it, use it and use it some more!! As soon as it cools off, heat it back up and throw something else in it. All jokes aside, they are not that hard to maintain.

But will you need a DO cooking table as well?  😮

Yes, this way you don't have to bend over to cook. Some people make their own,  I took the bottom third of a oil drum and put handles on the sides. Up side down for cooking on, right side up for storing my dutch oven gear in. Also the table / drum keeps you hot coals off the damp ground.

Great idea TMMull! how many ovens can you carry or store upside down? I have a 12" and 10".
At my local Lowes Home Improvement Store, they have a 4' fold up table I am looking at with a tan color platic top. I am thinking of purchasing it, take one side of plastic top off and have a metal top made with about 2 1/2 inch lip all around 3 sides to put back on. I see where screws on table frame screw plastic top on, when new top made, I would bolt top on. Legs would still fold up for storage.  This table is marked down to $36.00 at Lowes. Something to ponder and save money of a Dutch oven table.

I carry a 12", 10" and 8".  The 8" goes inside the 12" in one storage bag and the 10" goes in another bag with the utensils, trivet, etc. The 12" sits flat, the 10" on it's side and the charcoal chimney (with the liter fluid, lid lifter and chain for the tripod) takes up the remaining space.

Sounds like Joe is going to need a D.O. shower for all the accessories!  8)

I'm sure everyone has one of these somewhere in there house (at least those of us that are over 40!!). Been using it for years. Works out perfect.

However, I did just purchase and new Camp Chef DO table since I joined IDOS and Central Oklahoma Dutch Oven Society because I don't want to look like a junk dealer while I'm cooking for large groups!!!!

That's a great idea. Better than its intended use. When I find mine, I might convert it and gift it.  ;D

I really want to try that dutch oven cooking.  I've just about mastered the smoker and the grill.  Some say I should have a restaurant  LOL  But I've not tried the dutch oven.  Really hoping to convince the better and prettier half that I need one so I can cook in it.

I'm thinking about trying out the dutch oven this weekend so I'm less likely to screw it up at the Spring Opener.
Can I just put the coals on my home grill rack with the dutch oven on top and leave the grill lid open?
