After seeing the Shrimp & Grits request and Matthew posting the video to Hominy Grill, it got me to thinking about our own grub.  There's one restaurant about 30 miles (and three counties, cuz count distance like that) southeast of me I'll visit about once or twice a month that epitomizes Eastern NC barbecue.  It's called Abrams and has been around for many years.  http://www.abramsweb.com/  They just opened one in my county but the one I'm talking about is still closer.

What's your favorite?  Heck, tell us about favored restaurants near your camping grounds too.  Y'all know we like eating as much as we like camping!

I use to live down the street from Primanti Bro (same family) in Ft. Lauderdale, FL (2 locations). They are open 24/7. Great everything but in a seedy area on the beach.

Back in my younger days nothing was better than a primani sandwich at 3am in the strip district after a hard night of partying 🙂

New Jersey is known for their "Texas wieners".  Deep Fried Hot Dogs.  They didn't come from Texas, but Patterson NJ.  The Hot Dogs are usually topped with Chili which may be where the "Texas" comes from.  These places are usually mom and pop type places (maybe they have 2 or 3 places, but I wouldn't call that a chain).  They also have gravy fries.    MmmmmmMMmm  Everyone has "their" Hot Dog place.  I don't live in NJ but when I go back, I have to get my Texas Wiener  :dog:

I usually go to River View East in Elmwood Park NJ 'cause that is right next to the High School I went to but The Hot Grill in Clifton is just as good  :chef:

I'm from the 'BURGH area. Don't forget those giant fish sandwiches. Also, after working at the bowling alley all nite,
we would close up and go to James in Ambridge and have a
hot roast beef sandwich with french fries and  gravey on the fries. Then go to school.

Since we are so near the PA line I would say Harry's Place near Darlington, PA on rt 59.  When I was a kid I remember Harry sitting on a stool behind the bar.  He looked like Porky.

Anyway the famous fish dinner is still a foot long and mighty tasty.

Eagle:
My parents lived in Darlington for a while. Harry's was one of their favorites. He also had great roast beef sandwiches. Out here in Cali if you ask for a roast beef sandwich with fries and gravy, they look at you funny and their eyes glaze over. I have yet to find a good one, and I've been here a while.
This post is making me hungry and homesick. :-[

sg1215.. At least you can get a good burrito.  When I ask for burrito smothered in green chili I get the same glazed look.  I miss the west.  We are from here but we lived out in CO and UT for a couple years.  Visited Sacramento a few times for business.  The after party lead us to Old Sacramento.  They had some good restaurants and watering holes.

Call Harry he may ship you a roast beef sandwich.  🙂

OK, let me throw a wrench on this discussion. I travel a lot for work and found there are great and very tasty restaurants out there, and most of them are "holes in the wall", just need to find them.  Here are some of my favorite and this list is not limited too but is more of a start to these "holes in the wall" places;

BBQ - Fuller's in Fayettteville, NC
BBQ - BB King in Memphis, TN
Caribbean - Tropigonfo in Orlando, FL.
Mexican - The Loop in Manitou Springs, CO.
Japanese Sushi - Cherry Sushi on El Camino Real in California.
Hawaiian - Sugoi Kitchen, Ohau, HI
Peruvian - El Pollo Inka in Herndon, VA
Greek - Athenas in Sunnyvale, CA
Italian - Pomodoro in Leesburg, VA
BBQ - Interstate in Memphis, TN

and the list goes on ....

Being in South Florida it's hard to tell what is original for the area. Grits & Grunts did come from S Fla.
The two favorite locals I have are the Manatee Creek Restaurant in Port Salerno & the Crawdaddies in Jensen beach.
Crawdaddies is a New Orleans type of cuisine, never has a bad meal. Both have good live music.
Manatee Creek is just a few minutes from my house. Both of these are easy driving distance from Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
If you are ever down this way check them out.
used to live in Ft Lauderdale but that was before Pirmanti Brothers opened up.
When in Ft Lauderdale check out the Georgia Pig BBQ at 441 & Davie Bvld. South Florida's best BBQ.
